Elliptical trainer

I'm 4'11 and 121 lbs. Before I has my son, I weighed 105 lbs. Its been hard to get back into gear since having him, I'm not blaming him, its 100% me. My impulse control and laziness have gotten the best of me.
My son is 3 years old and has cerebral palsy. I NEED to get back into gear to get my health back to insure I'm gong to be around for him, and be strong enough to care for he needs as he gets older and bigger.
I guess what I want to ask is, if I do the elliptical for 30 minutes 2-3 times a week, that's a start right? And that's good isn't it? It's not for nothing? I'm afraid of starting and going to hard, and then giving up because it's too hard. Does anyone have any tips to just get going?

The most important thing to losing weight is ensuring you’re in a calorie deficit, so start with logging your food on here as accurately as possible. And with little to lose you’ll have to make sure you’re on top of everything. In regards to the elliptical that’s fine. You can work towards increasing your time and frequency on it as you go. You may also want to look into some form of strength or resistance training to help you retain your muscles as you lose.4

You don't need to use the elliptical to lose weight. Just a calorie deficit is enough. Cardio can help make a bigger deficit, but diet alone is all you need to drop down in weight.
To get stronger (aka maintain current muscles, if you're trying to lose weight), you need to lift weights.1 -

That's a great start! Combine it with staying in a calorie deficit and you are on your way!
I like the elliptical for stamina- if you can jog for a solid hour on an elliptical, that's a lot of stamina! Starting out- just do 15 minutes. After two weeks bump it up to 30, two weeks 45.2 -
Exercise can help you get to a calorie deficit, thus lose weight, but is not needed. For me, mother of 3 and 1 with special needs that will need my assistance for the rest of his life, I enjoy exercising for the mental break and stress relief. I like to listen to upbeat music or watch a tv show while I workout. To get stronger too, add in some weights to your exercise plan when you're ready.1

I agree with everyone else. It's not necessary for weight loss, that's all calorie deficit. However, I think it's a great idea to get on the elliptical! Exercise is good for your body, you'll get stronger and it will help with creating the deficit. And it's great for your mental health too. It's important to have something for yourself!2
