One of potassium's key biological functions is to regulate the electrical current in your heart. Supplementing potassium without a doctor's supervision can lead to levels of potassium higher than your kidneys can clear and cause your heart to slow down or stop completely, in the worst case. Prior to that though is all kinds of fun like nausea, muscle weakness, diarrhea and fainting.
I have to supplement potassium and my doc required multiple blood levels after multiple attempts at dietary changes and an echo before she'd even suggest the lowest dosage of an over the counter supplement.1 -
