    What brand of odometer does everyone recommend I get for the bike?

    After I found mapmyride.com, I didn't bother to put the bike odo/computer on my bike. I just remember where I went and map it online. If you use a smart phone, I'm sure there's an app for that. :smile:

    8/1 - 0
    8/2 - 7.0 miles.
    8/3 - 7.2 miles.
    8/4 - 1.2 miles. I mowed today instead of riding.
    8/5 - 1.0 miles. I finished mowing today instead of riding. Neighbor a couple doors down got hit on his bike Friday (hit & run). He didn't even fall, but wound up with a compound fracture of his left elbow. Be careful out there people. AND WEAR A HELMET.
    8/6 - 5.4 miles outside on a rainy day. Found a farmer's dog dead on the side of the road. Sad.
    8/7 - 6.2 miles.
    8/8 - 5.5 miles. My first ride without my Walkman (external speakers, not earbuds). I require music.
    8/9 - 0 miles. Rest day.
    8/10 - 10.0 miles. That's my longest ever ride. I've done 10 miles before, but split in two. It was also my fastest ride, averaging 11.8mph. It was hard. I am a wimp. That is okay.
    8/11 - 4.4 miles. Had to cut my route short because I was again attacked by dogs. Got my leg pretty good. The really scary thing about it is that since I'd never seen those dogs before on that route, they scared the crap out of me and I turned my bike such that if there had been a car coming from either direction (50 mph speed limit road), I would have been dead. I cannot ride fast enough to out-run the dogs. I almost cried. :(

    8/13 - 4.9 miles between storms (barely got home in time).
    8/14 - 7.5 miles (took neighbor with me for the first 2 miles, then on my own).
    8/15 - 3.3 miles (short ride cuz I had to mow too).
    8/16 - 0 miles. Mowed instead. Finally found out that the dog that bit me is up to date on shots.
    8/17 - 0 miles. Too fatigued.
    8/18 - 0 miles. 45 minutes of mowing soggy yard instead.
    8/19 - 2.5 miles in the dark. Way too many bugs at night on rural route. Ewww.
    8/20 - 5.9 miles. I felt sluggish, but the numbers tell me I did okay.
    8/21 - 5.9 miles.
    8/22 - 6.3 miles.
    8/23 - 5.2 miles. Would have liked to go a little more, but I rode faster than usual and it was 92 degrees outside.
    8/24 - 0 miles. Stormy day.



    Goal = 100 miles.
    Accomplished MTD = 95.4 miles.
    Remaining miles = 4.6 miles.

    I've been riding "naked"; rather than depend on an odometer, I've been plotting out my rides after the fact on gmap-pedometer.com. Of course, if I'm riding in unfamiliar territory or riding with a group and someone else set the route and is guiding me, that's a little tougher to remember.

    I've started trying out MapMyRide on my smart phone. I used it on yesterday's ride, but accidentally reset it during the ride so that didn't work so well. MMR has an online component and a smart phone component (kind of like MFP); it seems like those kinds of systems work best if you do your setup through the site before messing with it on the phone.

    A couple other cycling apps to look at are Cyclometer (I've used that, but there is no way that I've found to save or export the data), and Strava (which I haven't tried because it's not on Windows Phone 8). But if you have a phone with location services, I think getting an app is the way to go; cheaper than buying a separate device for my bike.

    Beautiful New England summer day brought me out for a scenic hour ride. Not a taxing, heart pumping one but joyful and calming, something that brings out a smile on you. Along the way I found a bike path I did not know in next town.

    11.5 miles ride brings up my total to 292 miles this month, and hitting 310miles (10 miles per day) is pretty much sure thing unless something really unexpected happens. I only need one of next five days to get there.
