Today was a very off day was not in the mood to go biking, still pushed myself to do something did not get very far at all. I was also wondering is there a way of calculating your calories burned when your riding against the wind. I know I sweat a heck of a lot more the windy days than the days there is little to no wind. I guess I would have to purchase one of those HRM monitors to get more accurate reading for calories burned.

    08/01 - 9.06 miles - 590 calories

    August goal = 100 miles.

    8/1 - 0
    8/2 - 7.0 miles.
    8/3 - 7.2 miles.
8/4 - 1.2 miles. I mowed today instead of riding.
8/5 - 1.0 miles. I finished mowing today instead of riding. Neighbor a couple doors down got hit on his bike Friday (hit & run). He didn't even fall, but wound up with a compound fracture of his left elbow. Be careful out there people. AND WEAR A HELMET.
8/6 - 5.4 miles outside on a rainy day. Found a farmer's dog dead on the side of the road. Sad.
    8/7 - 6.2 miles.
8/8 - 5.5 miles. My first ride without my Walkman (external speakers, not earbuds). I require music.
    8/9 - 0 miles. Rest day.
8/10 - 10.0 miles. That's my longest ever ride. I've done 10 miles before, but split in two. It was also my fastest ride, averaging 11.8mph. It was hard. I am a wimp. That is okay.
8/11 - 4.4 miles. Had to cut my route short because I was again attacked by dogs. Got my leg pretty good. The really scary thing about it is that since I'd never seen those dogs before on that route, they scared the crap out of me and I turned my bike such that if there had been a car coming from either direction (50 mph speed limit road), I would have been dead. I cannot ride fast enough to out-run the dogs. I almost cried. :(
    8/12 - 6 miles (another new route).
8/13 - 4.9 miles between storms (barely got home in time).
8/14 - 7.5 miles (took neighbor with me for the first 2 miles, then on my own).
8/15 - 3.3 miles (short ride cuz I had to mow too).

    Goal = 100 miles.
    Accomplished MTD = 69.6 miles.
    Remaining miles = 30.4 miles.

    8/14 2.55 walk
    8/15 13.67 ride

    Total so far: 116.99

Anybody have tips for prepping for a longer (50 mi) ride? The farthest I've ever gone in one ride is 36 miles. I'm signed up for the Tour de Cure on October 5.

Bad Parent confession time: I know that my children need more exercise. I know that my children want to spend time with me, 18 hours a day can hardly be enough. That being said, I have rejoiced in my little daughter's flat tires. My rides are my own. I get away, just me and my music and my crying muscles. Yesterday, as I was sneaking out, my daughter announce that she was going to ride her bother's bike. UGH!!! We rode to a nearby park, s l o w l y. I did ride a couple of fast laps around the park, but my little girl looked so forlorn playing by herself that I ditched the bike and went and played. I think that the 20 minutes swinging on the swings was the only time that my heart rate rose above 100. Still, I got in 5.3 miles and some quality time with my girl.

First month tracking rides in the forum

This is also my first year riding a road bike.

I had been riding a 32lb mountain bike with 26" wheels the last couple of years.. amazing how much faster a 21lb road bike with thin tires on 700CM (29") wheels is when you compare them.

8/1 - 10.6 miles (std Thursday night ride on the 'Greenway'.
8/4 - 4.5 miles (was camping prior weekend - sore and tired)
8/5 - 6.3 miles (warm up spinning muscles - hope for long ride on Tuesday)
    8/7 - 12.2 miles (15.9 mph avgerage over 12 miles)
8/9 - 15.2 miles (rode to work and back)
    8/10 - 12.5 miles (14.4 avg mph)
    8/11 - 6.5 miles
    8/12 - 5 miles
    8/13 - 11 miles
    8/14 - 5.7 miles
    8/15 - 8.0 miles

    MTD = 87.5

I made a similar change about 2 months ago. The road bike FLIES down the road compared to my heavy old mountain bike (which I'll keep around for when I want to bike on rougher terrain.) Sure a lot easier to hang the road bike on the vertical racks in the storage area at work too.

A heart rate monitor is the most accurate way to calculate calories burned and the zone you want to work in.
