What do you all think about intermittent fasting?
Here is my schedule:
Wake Up
No breakfast (Black Coffee only)
Lunch at 11AM
Dinner at 5:15PM
No snacking
Bed
I eat all of my calories for the day between 11am-5:15pm in the day. This gives my body 17 hours of fasting through the night/morning hours.
Is this a healthy way to do it? I have been seeing good results, it only takes a day or two to get used to.

It's healthy if your diet is healthy and calorie appropriate.
Eating in a different pattern would also be healthy if your diet was healthy and calorie appropriate.8 -
It's healthy if you like it and if you get in all the nutrition you need and don't overeat, both short term and long term. But you're techincally eating breakfast at 11; breaking your fast isn't magic, breakfast is the first meal of the day.3

What do you all think about intermittent fasting?
- A potentially useful tool for dietary adherence for some people (whether losing, maintaining or gaining weight).
- I liked 5:2 for weight loss and disliked 16:8 Leangains style for weight maintenance although I can easily skip breakfast and it has no great impact on my hunger either way.
- Currently very fashionable and too much unscientific woo is commonly being attached to it.
Is this a healthy way to do it?
Depends on what your lunch and dinner is.

I wouldn't really consider what you're doing as fasting, billions do and have lived perfectly well on two meals a day. Its only modern western convention that says we should eat three meals a day. To me, fasting is not eating for days on end, nothing. Fasting isn't what they do in Ramadan either, that's a total cop out.14 -
Minimizing supper or eating all of your food before 5pm is a good way to lose weight as long as you're staying within your caloric limits during the day. Food eaten at night doesn't metabolize as quickly as if you had eaten the same meal earlier in the day. Our stomachs are meant to rest at night like the rest of our body. Good luck!21

Absolutely incorrect. Your metabolism works 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. If it didn't, you'd be dead. Which is one way to lose weight, but not recommended. Thinking that your stomach rests at night is as physiologically false as thinking that your lungs stop breathing so they can rest at night.
As an n=1, I virtually never eat dinner before 5:00 pm - it's usually closer to 6:30-7:00, and is always my largest, most calorific meal of the day - almost always well over 1,000 calories. And I usually have some kind of snack (ice cream, Greek yogurt or whatever) even later than that. I've lost over 70 pounds eating that way.16 -
I don't consider this intermittent fasting. I belive in the general idea. I do somthing similar, it's just a slightly different way of getting your calories. I eat my first meal at 6pm. I have no problem fasting during the day and use IF as a tool to give me more calories for a nice evening meal and snacks afterwards. Works very well for me (nearly 6 stone down). I don't stick to any 'IF rules' - I just do it because it suits my lifestyle.6

Maybe it will be stored if the carbs aren't used initially?... You're stomach never rests, but if there is nothing in it... the body will pull from other places (fat, muscle) for the energy....13

So by your own theory, if the food isn't used (if you're sleeping) surely it would be stored. And during the day if you haven't eaten, the body will pull from its stores..6 -

But you metabolic rate generally doesn't slow down significantly during sleep it not universal either. This used to be a part of now outdated advice not to eat heave before sleep. Now feasting before bed is considered a universally bad idea for weight loss.
The general model where It doesn't matter so much what time of day you add calories... they still burn at a content enouth rate all other factors notwithstanding still holds but in general we all have patterns of activetty watch change the outcome. Sone people move alot more then others during sleep for example. There are contents too ie brain activety 20 to 50 calories / day and heart hate etc. So if you happen to burn 65 calories in one hour of non REM slerp odds are it's going to be about the ssme but i may burn more. As i recall it increased during REM cycles and i wake alot too.6 -

The majority of the energy that your body consumes isn't coming directly from your digestion process. The majority of food you consume goes through a series of steps before being expended. Simple sugars will convert quickly, but more complex sources will take a significant period.
Fwiw, from a personal perspective I'll generally breakfast at 0700, lunch about 1230 a snack about 1700 and my dinner between 2000 and 2100. That's largely driven by my work and training schedule.3 -

Metabolic confusion is a concept of dieting like calorie shifting which is more like what we want ftom intermittent fasting.... upsetting yourdigestion routines to confuse your metabolism such that it make it work "faster"... well more efficiently. The gole is to limit the bodys ability to "slow down" processes so you burn energy more consistently.15 -

Oh, please, no. You don't need to 'confuse' your metabolism. Simply including a 'refeed' or 'diet break' occasionally, if appropriate for your circumstances, is enough to keep you on track as you near your goal. A good thread to read is 'of refeeds and diet breaks' which discusses this in depth.6 -

It's not what I want from intermittent fasting. What I want is to be able to use most of my cals in the evening when I find I'm hungrier than during the day. It's a calorie intake/timing restriction for me, nothing more.7 -
