I’m going to do a near fast today. Never done this before. Drink water. Eat two pieces of fruit and a bowl of raisin bran with a little milk. That’s it.

So.... One meal a day? Or three meals a day? Or two meals a day? Or cut the fruit up and have lots of mini snacks?
... I clearly have no idea what a Near Fast is. Nearly fasting, but not quite?3 -

I don't get the point.....
I’m waiting for either “kick start my diet” or “holiday weight” or “detox” to be used.9 -

Well while we’re sharing I’m thinking I’ll have waffles for breakfast, tofu scramble for lunch, a protein shake before the gym, an apple after the gym, a burrito for dinner and some chocolate right before bed.18

Fasting like that really isn't going to get you anywhere, other than possibly slowing down your metabolism, making it harder to lose weight, assuming that is what you are trying to do. Sure, maybe when you step on the scale the next day you may be a pound less, but that's really just from less content in your stomach, not actually losing body fat.
You would be better off setting up a consistent calorie goal and sticking to it. Combine this with regular exercise, and you will have a formula for success. Minimum healthy recommended intake of calories is 1,000 for a female and 1,200 for a male, and even those numbers are very low.11 -
Thanks for sharing?
What are you going to do tomorrow or the rest of the week?1 -
He/she who eats the most and still loses wins.21

I'm not against these. I have them from time to time. But these are done for very specific reasons that are part of a very specific plan, at least in my case. I don't see the point otherwise. I use very low calorie days when I want to save up calories for a very high calorie day and not have to worry about being limited on a food event or some such, or because I feel like having a few higher calorie days. Doing it for the sake of doing it or to lose weight faster/detox/punish for a binge...etc is borderline disordered and is not beneficial to your weight loss in the long run. What is your purpose for doing this?
P.S: fruits are raisin bran is are not the best foods for such days. Higher protein foods would serve you better.2 -
You are going to be very hungry today then.
I am going to eat 3 meals with a couple of snacks and meet my calorie goal and not be very hungry today.
All joking aside why are you eating like this? Why did you post about it? Are you looking for advice or other peoples experiences?
If you are you will find most people will advise you to eat sensibly and just stick to your calorie goal. Why make losing weight more difficult than it could be.6 -

Amen! Really no need to punish your self or experiment with these fasts/diets *cough* whole30, etc. Big fan of iifym1 -
I have very occaisonal days when I only eat about that much - if I am sick or when I was recovering from surgery.
But not sure what the point of a planned day like this is? - one day won't hurt you and some people do fast for a day for various reasons ( no problem as long as balanced by their other days)
But what are you expecting to acheive with this?
Or is it just a random thing to share?
That's fine, I guess - my random share for the day - was 45 deg celcius here today and too hot to cook - my tea consisted of 2 boiled eggs, coleslaw, cheese, tinned tuna, tin of sweet corn.1 -
What's a near fast? Is it a partial fast, 3/4 fast, so confused.
And the end result will be? If you fair well doing it this one time, do you push it further the next time? Do you really think you will lose weight faster or better this way?
Really would like to know what goes on in the minds of people that not only do this but post an announcement to the world about it.2 -

These 2 points are incorrect. You're not going to hurt your metabolism by under eating for 1 day. The minimum calorie recommendations are 1200 for females and 1500 for males.
I agree overall with everything else you said and it's good advice. But these 2 points can cause confusion for the OP.5 -
Oooh a random share thread
I ate in a weird way too on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. My fever broke Friday and I ate perfectly normally for me8 -
I hope your 2 pieces of fruit are like a whole watermelon and a whole pineapple. Those are the biggest fruits I could think of. Maybe a papaya? Seriously, though... You can lose weight just by eating at a sustainable calorie deficit. No need to put yourself through all this.1

Or an avocado.... That's a fruit. At least some fat would be involved.6 -

If you do that a couple times/week that would be like a 5:2 IF eating schedule. Just don't think about doing that every day and eat at about maintenance the other days. Also the days you do that, it would be better to do that the later the better. Do that early and you will be starving by the end of the day.6

I do something similar every Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Occasionally other times through the year, but always for spiritual purposes. Since it's Three Kings Day, it shouldn't be a holy fast day.
Possibly the OP felt that by putting it in writing it would be easier to do?0 -
Thanks for all the comments. Someone asked why? Quite simply I want to lose some weight. I think it will be interesting to push some limits to see what it happens. My goal is to lose 2 lbs per week.7

Nearly fasting for one day won’t do anything for fat loss. Maybe some water weight. A real test of pushing yourself would be to eat at a small caloric deficit over a long period of time to slowly and safely lose weight that will stay off because you’ve taught your body what it actually needs instead of starve/binge extremes.10

You need a deficit of 7000 calories to lose 2lb. Unless you normally eat 7000 calories per day, "nearly" fasting for one day will not get you to your goal.3 -

Or you’ll lose water weight and food weight and then immediately put it back on the moment you eat something.

The fast of today is often followed by the binge of tomorrow.10

Sounds grim and unsustainable. I lose 2lb per week eating way more than that. Suffering does not burn more calories! Eat more - you're far more likely to stick to your eating plan long-term.1
