What does the "woo" button actually mean?

I've been taking in in the sense of "woo" as in magical thinking, bro-science, "you're full of it", thumbs-down button... but is that actually what it's supposed to be?

If you post about it in the vague thread you’ll probably get a faster, better answer.

    Godspeed

    Winning
    Others
    Over

    I think...

Sounds possible. Unfortunately that could be taken literally or sarcastically.

I believe the official MFP statement when it was introduced was that it can be construed as either a "Woo! Go you!" positive button or a negative "this is bunk/pseudo-science" button, though they don't officially want to have any negative buttons because this is supposed to be a place of acceptance, support and fluffy bunnies.

In my experience it's reserved for the latter, the favorite targets being those touting the health benefits of things such as apple-cider vinegar, bogus supplements or other things you'd find on Dr. Oz. So if I get woo-ed I take it as a negative.

It's very very mean and you should never ever use it unless you want to be mean. The mean people of MFP, who are all scientists, requested it because they hate people who love Dr. Oz and cleanses and detoxes. They're unnaturally fixated on these matters and they always want to talk about it. They proliferate in the other discussion rooms.

Here in Chit Chat we don't really give a toss about all that. But MFP has been generous enough to also allow us to use the woo feature as we see fit. And we do.

I just spit-laughed-out my iced tea. Thank you for this.

Too bad they couldn’t have kept it simple like “yay” and “nay”..

Like when you're a kid and you see people kiss and you and all your friends go "Wooooooo"
Oh, no that can't be it. Oh, well I tried.

I take it as a compliment. Even restraining orders. :)
