HOW does fat go away?

My daughter was asking me this earlier today, looking for a more precise answer than "it gets used for energy" and I realized I had no idea. And then a couple hours later I came across this article in my Facebook feed. Not the most exhaustive explanation, but worth a quick "Huh, I didn't know that"

I think a tallow candle is a nice simple analogy to explain "where does it go?" - the fat disappears but releases energy and gas as it does so.

That's how I was trying to explain it to her, but then realized I didn't have a firm enough grasp of the actual science to explain it WELL. My kid is WAY too smart, lol.
