Pregnancy weight loss

Hello, I’m 5’6” and 234lbs down from 252lbs.
I had just started my weight loss journey and was doing good until my fiancé and I had an oops. Now I’m pregnant with #3. So I stopped working out, stopped counting calories etc.
Just got back from my first appointment today, the doctor thinks I should continue trying to lose weight if I want a fair chance at a VBAC.
Problem is he acted very rushed and just said the basic BS of weight loss, eat right and exercise.
I’m only 5 weeks pregnant.
Stopped exercise/diet 2 weeks ago. Gained 4lbs. (Was down to 230)
From what I can tell, until the second trimester I don’t need any extra calories for the baby. Could I continue my diet of 1600cal/day for now?
From what the discharge nurse told me, I’ll lose weight at first, then maintain as I lose fat and gain baby.
I’m a runner, so I run and bike for exercise.
I’m just nervous, never been told to continue to lose weight during my previous pregnancies (started both those around 250lbs). But I really want the VBAC so I want to try.
Also if you could recommend a good not super expensive scale? Mine isn’t the best.

I would eat close to maintenance, maybe like 200 under. people have had successful pregnancies for ever without counting calories, some eat to much, some to little, dont stress about it, and continue working out, I went to the gym til I was about 16 weeks, if it starts not feeling ok, reduce the strain of your workout. running is fine and so are almost any workout, I have a friend who taught fitness classes through out her whole pregnancy. I made the mistake of stopping, and gained everything back and took 3 years to get back with it, it was frustrating. Try to "maintain" your current weight, as baby grows you will still be losing weight yourself.
as far as scales, I got mine for like $25 at walmart. and target or walmart scale should be just fine0 -
You can run if you were running before, just listen to your body and don't push it too hard. Ask your doctor for a referral for a dietitian who works with pregnant women. In the US its typically only the extremely obese that are recommended to lose weight, so we can't give you too much advice.1

I found this thread for calorie counting while pregnant extremely useful, and easy to understand:

I also enjoy participating in the fit, fabulous, and pregnant group. There are alot of other pregnant women who are fun to talk to and very supportive of one another.

Yes, you need very few extra calories in the first trimester, and if you are attempting to not gain/ gain very little you probably don't need to add much, if any, in the 2nd either. Using your specific stats (I made your age 30, so that probably isn't correct but shouldn't be throwing off the numbers too much) if you are sedentary the calories you burn daily should be around 2200 calories. 1600 claories/day is over 1lb/week weight loss, which IMO is pretty aggressive considering you are pregnant. I would see if you can discuss this farther with your doctor, see if you can get more info on how fast they think it is safe to lose weight. If you chose to keep your calorie goal definitely eat back exercise calories, and if you have not already make sure to start taking a prenatal vitamin. Above all, listen to your body, if you are feeling run down and struggling then pay attention!
This is the calculator I used to get those numbers so feel free to play with it on your own and see what you think

Any exercise you are used to doing and still find comfortable you should be fine to continue (use your best judgement, if you are mountain biking or trail running and have a higher risk of falling then take that into consideration). When pregnant you need to be more careful not to overheat, so depending on how the temps are in your area make sure to consider that. Also make sure you are drinking plenty of water.
~congratulations and best wishes0 -
If you were used to exercising you can still keep on doing that but always check with your doctor.
Eat maintenance calories now. Then in final trimester you will need to eat slightly above maintenance.0
