Thyroid cancer survivor and weight gain

There was a poster in another thread who wrote that a person with hypothyroidism basically gained weight because we overeat or don't move because we don't feel well or moving less because we are not happy with ourselves, and how the thyroid issue did not make us gain a lot of weight.

As a thyroid cancer survivor who no longer has a thyroid, I assure you that you can gain massive amounts of weight when your thyroid levels are way off.

They constantly play with my medicine and even with watching what I eat and exercising, I have experienced weight gains of 10 pounds in a week, granted a lot of it was water weight for which they then put me on a diuretic for a short time to help me.

Every time they change my medicine, I experience a short term 3 to 5 pound weight gain.

It gets so aggravating to constantly explain about not having a thyroid, always feeling bad and gaining weight sometimes of 10 pounds in a week to those who do not have thyroid issues.

And yes sometimes when I am feeling really bad, I do not move as much as I should. But then again what person does when they feel that bad.... nobody .....that's who. There are days when I can barely get out of bed and function, but I do. But some days that's all I can do because I am so wiped out after work.

So how about we be a little less judgmental about others struggle with weight and the issues that cause them to gain weight because I assure you those of us with thyroid issues know that crazy weight gain is possible with thyroid issues.

We just have to work even harder than most to counteract them!

Perhaps you can reference the thread so we can see what you're seeing?

I haven't seen anyone be judgemental about thyroid related weight gain, but I have seen posters with experience try to disabuse thyroid sufferers of the myth that hypothyroidism is the cause of their weight gain. Water weight gain is not fat gain.

Thank you for your post, @parrishhenryjr Scale weight gain can be very disconcerting no matter what the cause, and it's helpful for people to understand that scale weight gain is not, by itself, indicative of over eating or under moving.
