A deficit is a good thing. Too big a deficit is not. MFP already factors a deficit for you, so when you increase it with exercise, you run into issues with having too big a deficit.7

Yes, eat exercise calories back BUT do be careful - MFP and other apps are prone to giving you too many exercise calories. I have been in the habit - due to advice I received here - of only eating back perhaps 50% of the exercise calories MFP gives you for any given activity. Even the gym machines give me less calories than MFP and MapMyWalk does - MapMyWalk gave me almost 400 calories the other day for snowshoeing for 35 minutes and less than 1 mile - and that I knew was bunk. I did feel a little fatigue, but I was not showshoeing Mt. Washington - it was a mostly flat 1 mile trail with about 7 inches of snow if that - LOL. I gave myself 200 calories and even that seemed a little much.1

If I didn't eat back some of my running calories, I probably wouldn't have energy for my next run.4
