cross-country skiing -- try it!

Options
I've been a downhill skier for a while, but just discovered cross-country skiing. It's wonderful! It got me off my couch and out of the city on this winter day. It didn't cost an arm and a leg like downhill skiing. It was peaceful, quiet, and so beautiful! We saw waterfalls and streams in the snowy woods. We stopped and had our lunch in a little warming hut with a wood-burning stove.

We went for a total of about 4 hours including our lunch break. MFP calls that a 1300 calorie burn for light effort (and it felt like more than "light" effort to me!). I'm sure we'll be back again for more.

Just thought I'd encourage others to get out there and try it if it's an option in your area. :)

I agree...X-country skiing is great exercise. Can't be done in Connecticut right now but I'm sure that will change soon.

I was a x-country skier b4 I became a downhill skier and, now that I'm older and have given up downhill skiing, I've been thinking about taking up x-country skiing again.

No snow to speak of in CA yet but if there' s a big dump I might drive up to Norden or Truckee to give it a try again at one of the x-country ski centers there.

Nordic skiing is the most fun you can have with your clothes on. Fantastic full body workout too, the fittest people on Earth are competitive Nordic skiers.

I'm still waiting for snow in the Sierra. There are storms forecasted this week so I'm keeping my fingers crossed. I can't wait to finally try it!

This and snowshoeing are my two favorite winter sports. Flu has kept me from getting out, but it seems to be getting better, so maybe later this week I can.

It was such a beautiful clear night that we went for a ski as soon as I got home from work. Then I walked in the door and read this thread LOL. The stars were so bright this evening that I felt like I could reach out and touch Orion's Belt. Love LOVE going x country skiing at night! And I enjoy snowshoeing too of course. Life is very very good right now :)

As I made my way up and up and up today I was thinking of how fast the competitive skiers are -- it's amazing! We enjoyed going up. But the way down was much more fun. :)

I bet you'll enjoy it. Do give yourself some time at the start to get the rhythm and balance of things.

I'm sitting here in the middle of an Australian summer seething with jealousy. Gonna go for a trail run in a couple hours and will try to imagine the hot dusty trails are actually covered in snow. *sigh* it won't work.
There's never any snow round here anyway. *sigh again*
