ITP IDEAS

Hi there. Does anyone else on here have ITP? (If you have to ask what it is, chances are, you don't or haven't been diagnosed with it).

I was diagnosed about 9 months ago. Every 3 months my platelets drop by 10-20K. Last count was a cool 91K.

Anyway, I bruised up pretty bad at the gym the last time I went. I didn't do anything unusual. Just worked out as per equip. directions for the amount my trainer said to. My entire upper thigh was purple by the next day and I had terrible bruising on the inside of my upper arms. Do Doc says "no more gyms for a while".

Added to that I get very tired mid-afternoon, around 4pm. End up sleeping through Judge Judy, which frosts me because she's one of the few shows I like (she's ornery like me :D ). So if anyone out there with ITP has ideas to get over the ITP slump, and alternatives to exercise that won't bruise me (I need toning) pls share. Thanks.

And to avoid confusion: unless you HAVE ITP or work with those who HAVE ITP please don't reply. Unless you're close to the condition, your advice will not be pertinent. Thanks!

This was posted almost a year ago, I know, but I wanted to reply because they never got any replies and I do have ITP. If OP is still around, if you count is 91 that should not effect your life whatsoever beyond a tiny bit of petechiae and a barely worse than normal susceptibility to bruising. 91 is an absolute dream count for most of us. Exercise of any kind is safe with a count that high! My only advise is to just keep monitoring your blood count and hope they stay above 30k! Mine used to stay roughly in the safe range between 60-100, but they have been dropping steadily for the past 6 months, and as of this week they're down to 36. If this continues I'm on track to start treatment I'd rather not have, beginning with corticosteroids :(

But really OP, you should not be bruising "pretty bad" at the gym doing nothing out of the ordinary with a count of 91. That's practically a normal count, relatively speaking, and you have a ways to go before any risk of bleeding incidents emerges. If you are bruising at the gym and not just from accidentally banging yourself on the equipment, you may be overdoing it.
