    You always burn some fat while running any good distance. However, your body starts burning fat almost exclusively when your glycogen stores run out. How long depends on the person, but it's typically longer than a half marathon or a couple of hours.

  • Any sort of cardio will burn calories and in turn burn fat. I'm assuming you're talking about long duration cardio, during which your glycogen stores will last well into a full hour.

    Sure, long duration cardio gets your body in the "fat burn" mode as opposed to HIIT which is beyond 60-70% of your heart rate, but in the long run this is irrelevant.

    Broscience will make you nitpick the pros and cons of each. Just do what you enjoy.

    You burn fat when eating at a deficit. Your body can provide 31.4 calories per day from each pound of fat. If you consume less than you expend, you will burn fat. Running just makes you expend more on the days you run potentially making the deficit larger (unless you subscribe to the "always eat back calories" notion). Get your BF% and compute how much your body can provide. Don't go over that as a deficit and make sure you eat enough to get the nutrients you need.

    I began running a year ago and lost 60 pounds almost all fat. I run around an hour. I don't do any other exercise. I began losing when i worked up to an hour 2x or 3x a week about 6 miles that's when the pounds began melting. Combined with eating the calories mfp calculated.

    You'll start burning fat in less than a minute. After that what percentage of what you burn is fat is dependant on length of time running, how well you are trained, and intensity.

    If you are doing it for weight loss then none of that really matters.
