Stevia

Having cut out sweetener and caffeine, i am missing my morning 'coffee'. So much that I'm likely to cave fairly soon.

Any experiences of Stevia in decaf? It's a bit pricey so want opinions before I buy.

My husband likes it. I remember that he first bought it before it was mainstream. We had to some out of the way health food store to get it, and it's in what looks like a common spice jar. It came with the tiniest little "spoon" I've ever seen--basically that hold what a fingernail would. Since it's so potent, you don't need much. I mention this because I think a lot of what is available in regular grocery stores is made to mimic sugar--so there are additives to give it bulk. If you get the real stuff, it might not be so expensive. (Well, still expensive for the container we got, but it's lasted forever!)

Thank you, I plan on getting the natural stuff which is pricey. The supermarket ones are still laced with sweeteners and additives.

See if there's any way you can sample ti first - some people can really taste a bitter, horrifying aftertaste with it. MOST people can't taste it at all, and for MOST people it's great stuff. But *if* you're one of the people who can taste it, best to find out before dropping the $$$ on it, kwim? I personally can't stand Stevia.

yeah, as far as supermarket sweeteners go, I definitely like my maltodextrin laced with splenda not stevia.

Stevia has a wicked bad aftertaste to me as well and just isn't sweet enough vs. the alternatives.

Very true. I've wasted money on Splenda and Truvia so far. Gave the whole box of Truvia to my sister-in-law who likes it. To me it's all disgusting. The aftertaste is horrendous and I'd rather just use real sugar or preferably the Sugar in the Raw. I'd also rather work off the whole 30 calories in 2 tsps of real sugar than suffer through destroying my coffee with that crap!

That's funny, only the other day I saw a group test done that backs up a theory that 25% of people have 'extra tastebuds' that taste the bitterness in some foods... judging by this thread I's say that's true!

I use Stevia in my cooking and it just tastes like regular sugar to me, so I guess i'm not afflicted with extra tastebuds.

LIke someone above has said, its sweeter than granulated sugar, so you need far less. So one of those jars will last you twice as long as the same weight in sugar.

Definitely agree - get a taster first
