Weight training for beginners

I'm 5'7 and currently 189pounds my goal is 150 pounds I am currently walking nearly everyday and running two days a week I bought a curl barbell set and I want to start using it to build muscle but I am unsure to how many reps Sets or exercises I should be doing and also what weights I could be doing when starting off

When I spoke to a trainer about this they told me I should do 3 sets of 10 because my goal was to define and strengthen my muscles. As far as weight I was told that it should be heavy enough where the last 2 in the each set of 10 is a little hard to do but not painful. I stay at that weight until it gets to easy then add weight.1
