Stomach cramps after running

Last night I went for a 4 mile run on a treadmill. It wasn't at a blazing fast pace for me. I've just gotten back into running in the last few weeks. I've run 3x a week plus some other exercise for the last 3 weeks. Last week my longest run was 4.5 miles. After that run I felt fine. After the one last night I had stomach cramps about an hour later and felt like I might throw up. I still feel a little weak this morning.

I'm thinking it is what I ate before or dehydration. Last week before my long run I ate a salad and some bread. This week, I ate spaghetti, meatballs, garlic bread and salad. Not a huge portion (I was actually in my calorie range for the day even before the run). I didn't drink much water before, during or after the run. I drank some later when I was feeling sick. I still feel weak and not very good this morning but I'm eating breakfast (oatmeal and an orange) hoping it will work. Today will be a rest day too.

Why do you think this happened so I can prevent it in the future?

sound more like a bug if you feel ill this morning than something that running caused.

Looks like you ate too heavy. For many people eating with a full stomach(esp protein) will cause cramping and discomfort.

After the one last night I had stomach cramps about an hour later and felt like I might throw up.

One hour later, it was not the run.
Believe me, if it's the run (from dehydration, training near your threshold HR, wrong eating...) you'll know IN the run, not one hour later.

^^^ This. If it was run related you would normally experience discomfort during the run.

Sounds like a bug or a bad meatball....
  • I've been having an issue very similar to yours, but I agree with the above posters that it's probably not related to the run. I've had the symptoms three separate times and there's no correlation to my cardio or lifting. The doctor ruled out gallbladder or organ issues and said that it is likely due to stress, either inflammation or an excessive production of stomach acid.... so.... stressed about anything in particular?

I get symptoms immediately after running sometimes. Something about running stimulates my bowels and while I don't have an issue during the run I get gas cramps within 2-15 minutes of stopping. However... it's definitely gas in my case ;). I figure the adrenaline of running keeps it from hitting until I stop.

After a full meal, it's better to wait a couple of hours before running. I can eat a peanut butter sandwich and run an hour later, if it's a short run, but after a big meal, I need to wait. Also, fiber and fat don't digest well when running. That's why it's not a good idea to eat a high fat meal (like pizza) before a long run or race.
