TDEE explained

Hello! You smarties probably already know all this, but I just took a class called The Mathematics of Fitness and learned this about TDEE.
TDEE = total daily energy expenditure or calories burned per day. This includes your resting metabolic rate (RMR) which is 60-75% of calories burned, thermal effect of food which is about 10%, and thermal effect of exercise which is 15-30%.
Your RMR is determined through gas exchange analysis where oxygen consumption at rest is measured by a metabolic analyzer. OR, you can estimate it:
For men, RMR = (9.99x weight in kg) + (6.25x height in cm) - (4.92x age) + 5.
For women RMR = (9.99x weight in kg) + (6.25x height in cm) - (4.92x age) - 161.
1 pound = .454kg
1 inch = 2.54 cm
Then multiply this number by
1.2 if sedentary
1.375 if lightly active
1.55 if moderately active
1.75 if very active
1.9 if extraordinarily active
All this calculating gives you the general amount of calories you burn in a day. I think these calculations are on MFP somewhere, but after taking this class, it finally makes sense to me!
Have a great day!

This is great. Thanks for explaining. There are always questions about TDE and activity.0

Except MyFitnessPal isn't a TDEE calculator - it puts exercise to one side which make your daily goal xxxx calories + exercise calories.
Unlike TDEE sites which lumps day to day activity and exercise together into a single activity multiplier.
(If done correctly both methods end up in the same place over an extended period of time....)6 -
There is a good thread about TDEE in the 'most useful......' link at the top of this sub-forum.
http://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/931670/bmr-and-tdee-explained-for-those-needing-a-guide/p1
NB: MFP uses NEAT, not TDEE to calculate daily calorie needs. This makes the calculations available for those not exercising.
Cheers, h.3 -
Sounds like a really good class! Should be available to more of us.0
