Email them but not sure that's a strong defence for a refund.

You can email them, but they have no obligation to give you one. That's on you.

this is why I never sign up for free trials that involve giving your payment details.

I wonder how much income is generated from companies running this model .. I know I have paid out for several things in the past I havent wanted due to the 3month / 6 month auto renew kicking in ... grrrr

A huge amount. It's like gym memberships, they make the $$ off the people who just let it run.

This is what visa/mastercard gift cards are great for, no balance, no charge

These days some payment processors can tell if it's a real credit card or a gift card. There are some places that won't let you sign up for a free, auto-subscribing trial with a gift card.

Also, if the card is declined, they could theoretically come after you in collections since you DID agree to be auto-billed when you accepted the terms of the trial. This is a de facto contract and you would be in breech.

Best to just set up a reminder in whatever calendar you use to cancel.

Whenever I sign up I cancel at the same time, don't have to worry then. I very much doubt they will do anything though sadly.

Yeah I do that anyway but OP clearly does not, but have never had an issue with using a gift or a prepaid card for any subscription service yet. I mostly use the prepaid card for hotel bookings with the likes of booking.com or laterooms.com to avoid situations where a hotel decides to take a pre-authorisation months before a booking without contacting me first and affecting my available balance on my actual debit/credit card

Yeah, I was relying on a reminder I set to cancel but I'm a muppet and missed it. Expensive mistake for 1days use of an app!!

I did not sign up for a year subscription knowingly, I hit the get one month FREE trial thinking I would be able to unsubscribe free trial but instead was charged $135!
