Logging

But if I am supposed to be logging 750 calories less than my maintenance calories, how does not logging one handful of potato chips going to stall my weight loss? One handful of potato chips does not equal 750 calories which would put me back at maintenance. You would have to be missing hundreds and hundreds of calories of food a day!

Missing hundreds of calories in a day is pretty easy to do. A handful of chips could very easily be 100+ calories.

I weighed a measuring cup of oats that wasn't even full. 46g....A serving is 40g. That would take my calories from 150 to 172. If I was using a measuring cup, that log would be off by 22 calories. Add that to your example of unlogged chips and I'm now 122+ into my deficit. That's with only two items that separately don't seem like a big deal. Let's add to that. I used to be able to get away with not logging my crystal light. At only 10 Cal's a bottle, it's not a big deal...right? Well today I have used 4. Add that to the chips and oatmeal from before...now I am 162+ into my deficit.

How are you defining a stall, though?

Let's say you've got an ounce of chips in that handful. That's 150 calories.

Now you're at 600 calories for a deficit.

Will you gain? No. But you're not going to lose that 1.5 pounds a week either, unless you have a 900 deficit on other days.

shadow2soul, I thought this info was very interesting. Wow, what a difference in calories when we guess our portions instead of measuring them. Thank You ! :)

Right now you probably can get away with not logging the odd snack. But once you get close to your goal weight? That handful of potato chips could render your very small deficit non-existent.

This. The closer you get to your goal, the smaller your deficit will get. A lot of people get to where half a pound per week is appropriate and suddenly they can’t seem to lose anything, and why not? Because they never got into the habit of measuring condiments, weighing portions, and logging bites and tastes. It wasn’t a big deal when they had 750 calories of headroom, but when that margin is cut down to 250 all those little discrepancies can get you there easily.
