Japanese bento box calories

m5f42ha5r1gh.jpeg

Anyone got some suggestions on the calories in a bento box that contains the things listed in the image.

I tried googling etc but I feel all the answers I got were far too low like one was 500 calories.

Just curious if these bento boxes are actually lower calories than I thought.

I’m thinking closer to 1000 calories.

I've yet to eat a sub 1000 Bento box if everything in one is eaten. It does depend on portion sizes, amount of rice especially, dressings and sauces.

Even with low sodium soy sauce expect a serious water weight swing.

    Enjoy the outing!

I'd figure closer to 1500, especially when dealing with the deep fried options.

    i would agree.

for this (very small compared to ones eaten in other places) bento box:

I sent the salad back with apologies and got it exchanged for one with no dressing.

I also ate one piece of crunchy roll someone else had ordered (not pictured), so I actually logged 1130 for the pictured items. My log does not including almost all of the rice as I only ate a spoonful, leaving the rest. Eating all of it would have probably added another ~220 calories.

Those sound like much larger (and more expensive) bento boxes than the ones I typically get. I think 1000-1500 sounds like a pretty safe estimate for those.

500-700 is probably more of the mini bento that I would find for ten or twelve dollars as a lunch special...just some salad, rice, 4 pc Cali roll and pickled ginger, tiny portion of steamed edamame and a few shrimp.

That was in a small town in Alberta (just one or two sushi places in the whole town). In Vancouver the sashimi pieces and rolls are significantly larger, even in better restaurants where they normally tend to be smaller than in more mediocre ones.

Sorry for stating the obvious but... this is a North American bento box? It's all fried andor covered in mayonnaise! I'm honestly shocked.

Yes, there is a lot of fried food, often in north american bento boxes!

You do have access to a scale since you seem to have it at home

Probably too late now, as I hope you've already eaten it... but it would have been a perfect opportunity to at least weight the ingredients to have a better idea.

I don't know if it is quite 1500. But it would be hitting 1K on an eyeball. Again... are you eating everything? Excluding anything? What is the upper right item and sauce?

Sure the chicken is fried/has breading but depending on size (and oil absorbed by breading) it may be under 350 Cal. Or over. Say 200ish for rice depending on size of pile. 75 each gyoza if the are as largish as they look. Are the fish an oz each or half an oz each? Atlantic salmon farmed raw. The rolls are mainly rice... imitation crab would be only a few grams. But is there mayo in the upper two rolls?

    Thanks all

Gave me a better idea of the calories involved.

I was disappointed by the chicken. And was a little confused by the slices of melon, that’s a first for me
