Is it advisable to replace a meal with a protein supplement, when on an aggressive calorie restricted diet and employing light cardio as your only exercise?

I'm a proponent of a balanced and varied diet, but depending on context, a protein shake can of course be a part of a balanced and varied diet. The most important questions might be why you're considering replacing a meal, and what aggressive calorie restricted diet means.

For weight loss I suppose it would work in the sense that your protein shake will be less calories than a meal. However, will that satisfy you? I use protein shakes or a pure bar as only a supplement so I can get more protein overall. Instead of grabbing a bag a chips or candy bar, I have a protein snack of choice in order to meet my protein goals while staying in my caloric budget.

I only use protein shakes if I have a busy day or cannot pack a proper meal/lunch or whatever. I do my best to get all my nutrition from actual food.
