Fitness band or health problem?

Ok so I'm a little scared right now!

Looked up on the fitness band app when I got home to see how many steps I'd done today as I always do. My heart rate said my lowest was 40bpm see that lots of times but apparently at 9:20am it was 193bpm! Now at that time I was just sat with a group of y11s doing some maths.

At no point have I felt ill or dizzy today or felt any heart thumping or racing at all. Surely id notice something if it was that high? It is a complete shock to me! The only thing I've been suffering from is a pulled back thanks to the dog which was bothering me this morning having been sat for half an hour.

I've tried to Google stuff but nothing really comes up. I've had heart rates recorded in the 130s and 140s before but kind of dismissed them as I don't have an expensive band and again I haven't felt ill anything at the times it's given. Plus they have usually been when I know I've been active at those times.

Am I worrying for nothing? Or should I go into full panic mode?

    Probably just a fluke.

I assume this is worn on your wrist. Incorrect measurement is not unusual with a wrist-based HRM. Even with a chest strap, there are times where it will give incorrect measurements of your heart rate. Unless you had other symptoms, I would not take the results of a consumer grade device as indicating an issue with a one-time event. I am quite sure you would notice a heart rate of 193. In my opinion, you are worrying for no reason. If it happens often, even then I would say the likelihood is device error unless a manual check of your pulse showed it was similarly elevated. Having said that, I am not a doctor, so this is not meant as medical advice as much as advice concerning the potential weaknesses of consumer level devices.

It's a fluke...you'd know it if you hit 193 BPM...your heart would be pounding out of your chest...

No point of going into full panic mode! For starters, I’d learn to take my pulse manually so I could compare. If it continues, write down your data for 1-2 weeks then talk yo your doctor.

    Thank you everyone.

I kind of figured it wasn't true having noticed nothing physically! In fact I was quite relaxed and happy at that time which is why it shocked me. If I had noticed anything I'd have checked then and been phoning the doctor.

I think I just needed someone else to confirm what I was saying in my own head. My ex died of a heart attack at age 46 ( he ignored prior ill health warnings) so its something im a little paranoid about ( heart issues ran in his family but not in mine).

I will keep an eye on it but I'm a little calmer now! Thank you.

Just a data point: My Polar HR monitor (chest belt type) gives me wonky readings - including occasional crazy-high ones (over my tested max heart rate) when the battery's starting to get a little low.

This may not be a current problem with your device, but it's indicative that a high reading is possible if the device isn't working right.

I got a 108% of max peak during a workout the other day, despite my feeling completely normal . . . I think it's about new-battery time again. ;)
