Think I’m pissing everyone off?...

So since January I’ve decided to go back to the gym and get fit!
But I think I’m getting obsessed and I wanna talk about gym and fitness and food all the time! Only to keep me motivated and because I’m loving it at the moment... but all my friends and my boyfriend especially hate me right now because they’re getting sick of it hahaha.
I can see where they’re coming from, but I need friends so I can have these discussions with!
Just wondering if anyone else is annoying people with this aswell?... ha!

This very thing happened to me. My daughter said all I talk about is the gym, healthy food, and food labels....lmao! Never thought something so positive would piss people off.8

yup ... I talk about food, calories, gym and cycling and nothing else ... My family now avoid me !4

Hey keep doing you. If people are happy for you then they will support and understand you. Don't let anyone take away your sparkle.5 -
It got to the point that I started NOT talking about any of it. I really just don't mention it to friends anymore. One friend likes to tell me what she eats every day and it's a parade of chain restaurant meals with ice cream and donuts after, then cocktails...when I see her and have lost a little more weight she's "offended I don't share my tips"...I gave up on that years ago tbh.10

I found myself doing similar and tried to tone it down and use MFP for my fitness socializing. My husband still sometimes gets annoyed, but he can't really get away from it.10

I hang out here to get that enthusiasm out of my system - to be honest, I don't find talking about fitness and weight-loss especially interesting if the person I'm talking to isn't at the same place as me. I figure it's much like any other kind of hobby - it's one thing to briefly fill people in on what you're up to, but if you're going deep into the weeds you're not going to have a very good conversation if the other person doesn't know or care about whatever you're talking about as much as you do.25
-
That's why I come to MFP. I would bore many of my friends and family otherwise.
But I also try to cultivate other interests anyway. I love working out but there is more to life than that too.5 -
There's a joke with a bit of truth to it:
How do you know someone is into crossfit(or marathons or triathlons)?
Don't worry, they'll tell let you know!21 -

Pretty much this^0 -
Yeah I don't anymore. My husband lost all his weight and doesn't need me anymore. lol I have some running friends but that is what we do is run together and that's it.
I hang out here, my favorite subject is food, oh and lifting I do that too. Plenty of that to talk about here!3 -
That's what these forums are for me. I have a few coworkers and friends that I can chat about it in passing, but getting "into the weeds" of it I think starts to annoy them, so this is my place to talk about it - doesn't completely solve the problem, but my cats don't give a rat's behind about it, and no one else at home to talk to LOL6
-
I am uncertain if considering this as an obsession's entirely accurate, due to it's effect upon nearly every facet of our lives!
I'd equally find the opposite via those whom're unhealthy, consistently complaining concerning the consequences of their lifestyle & how they're going to intentionally make it worse, by over consuming something that they're constantly craving!1 -
I just joined this website, so talking to people with the same goals will be key to my success. Lot's of pressure to sway from my goals, so keep the positive energy coming. It helps a lot.4

Don't be that guy...
That's what the forums are for...
I don't really discuss much outside of these forums and with my riding and other fitness friends. My buddy doesn't want to hear about my 20K PR ride while we're having a beer...he doesn't care so I'm not going to annoy him with it...11 -
I used to when I first started this journey..now I just keep to myself and come here for the comradery of like-minded individuals. If a friend/family asks for advice or support I then extend it.7
-
That's what here is for. I still want to talk to people, but interests and hobbies outside of fitness do still exist.
Plus, talking about CICO, lifting, and stuff like that just brings out the woo from everyone.6 -
It's a common stage, lol, and actually helpful. The enthusiasm means it is topmost on your mind. And therefore you are taking it more seriously. As it becomes habit (and a bit more boring) your conversation will naturally move into other subjects.2

Thanks for the responses everyone!
I guess a part of me hoping they’ll jump on the bandwagon and join me in the gym as right now I’m going on my own! Perhaps I’ll meet new friends.... lol
But yeah these forums are definitely helping me!2 -

That's more likely to happen if you're silently doing you...very likely not to happen if you're being annoying about it.
My wife got back into the swing of things after watching me for a few months and she saw me dropping my weight and getting healthier and more fit...I rarely talked about what I was doing...it was self evident.
That was over 5 years ago and we're both going strong and talk about fitness a lot more because we're both into it.
And yes, over the years I've made plenty of fitness friends in the gym and out on the road on my bike.7 -
Well I'm an outlier- I over share on everything- I tend to over share on my personal life, my dancing and my lifting.
It makes me a crappy coworker. I mostly don't feel bad about it. I only feel bad that I can't seem to keep my trap shut. That's about it.7 -
Just get/talk about a few hobbies or things you do. As much as I've always loved lifting, there are other things...1

Me too. I mean, I feel bad that I can't keep quiet.
I don't care that I'm sharing- because eff them- but I find it gets me into trouble and I wish I was a more private person. But- well- it's just not my normal MO .
I even got a new tattoo to remind me to keep my trap shut- it's barely working.3 -

I think I know what you mean about wanting to be a more private person. I have written on my hand or worn certain rings to remind me to keep quiet. Sometimes it works.
Lol- I left work early yesterday b/c I was afraid I was going to lose my mind. I made it out with a basic "I'm going home" - walked out the doors- down 3 flights of stairs -and across the causeway- my other coworker was out smoking and I was 25 feet off the building and she was like "you leaving?" (um- duh)- yes I says.
She said something about why and of course I had to yell back "eff them" waving up at our desk space.
LIKE COMMMANNNNNNN- WHY CAN"T YOU JUST SAY NOTHING. I'm hostile- and I like talking. It's a bad combo.5 -
I look at it as part of the experience. When you start you start to understand something that really isn't that complicated and how great it can be, you want to share this with as many people as possible. Problem is it's like religion in that many people either don't care or don't agree with you.
Once the initial rush is over you find like-minded people and talk with them mainly. Every now and then someone may ask you about "what have you done" and you'll start to moderate what you share.3 -
@JoRocka I could've written your posts. I am the same way! It's so hard to be any different. Every morning i tell myself I will keep it shut, and then, voila... same *kitten* different day. Lol2
-
Best to keep it to yourself because it can be terribly annoying. I have to really bite my tongue when others talk about some miracle cleanse, or fruit diet or soup diet that someone they know has done and lost lots of weight with. Sometimes I can't help myself and say what I think, but 9 times out of 10, it falls on deaf ears, so what is the point?People don't want to hear the truth.4
-
I do this with every new hobby. Annoying I am sure.
Make sure to ask people about their life and their stuff, too, and you should be good.0 -
Get. Personal trainer and dietician to unload on. It’s their job to talk about food and fitness2
