How to Increase Run Speed?

I have NEVER been a big runner. Even when I was in the National Guard, I always scathingly passed my running time. But now that I have an extra 50lbs on my frame that I'm looking to lose, and I'm thinking about re-enlisting. I know I have to find a good running routine to be able to pass my two mile run when I get back in.
My question is, what's the best way to build back up to running two miles, and to increase run time? I know as I start losing weight, it will get easier, and the more I run, it will get easier. But there are so many different articles online, it's starting to make my head spin! I have to run my two miles in 20 minutes and 30 seconds.

Just do a C25K program or otherwise go out and run. Interval work is going to do the most for your speed...any C25K program I've ever seen has a fair bit of interval work as well as your "long runs." You may need to do a couple rounds if you're really out of shape.0
