Why would it be? People with activity trackers go on treadmills and have their steps counted.

If you don't have a tracker, then using your phone as a pedometer sounds like a great idea.

Only if looking at your phone results in err.... a walking accident

Morally wrong or it won't count steps properly?

If it works then use it.

The reason I asked this question is because I didn’t know if my phone would be more accurate then the treadmill

I guess it depends what you are trying to track. I use my fitness watch on the treadmill and it counts my steps accurately, but is off a little on the distance. If I want to do 5K, I go by the treadmill. But if you are trying to figure out calories burned, neither is really close.

If you want to calculate calories burned, use one of

walking Distance in miles * .3 * your weight in pounds
Running Distance in miles * .63 * your weight in pounds
