I personally use OXO but they pretty much all work. Get a digital one that does both grams and fractional ounces and has a tare function.

The scale doesn't have to have the capacity to hold a ton of weight, but the more it can handle the more you'll be able to use it for. I have a smaller scale that has a 5 pound limit and I find that it's more than adequate for most purposes.

Get a scale that has the ability to detach the read out from the body of the device. This comes in very handy when measuring in larger bowls or plates, etc.

I have two Ozeri ones from Amazon. One on my desk at work and one in my kitchen at home. I saw one on Amazon the other day that has a built in database and codes for different foods. Say, you put an apple on it, you give it the code for the apple and it will give you the nutritional values per the weight. Thought that was pretty neat, as long as it is actually accurate.

I don't have a recommendation for a specific scale, but something you might want to consider when shopping.

I bought a cheap one at Target and while it works fine the platform the plate sits on is rather small. It works fine for bowls and small plates but when I put my salad plates or full size dinner plates on it, I can't see the numbers on the scale. Drives me nuts.

Next one I buy I will remember this flaw and find one that's either bigger or has the display in a better place.
