Anyone else with 1 kidney, or reduced kidney function?

If you are, does it hold you back when it comes to training? Just read an article about Crossfit and the risk of rhabdomyolysis. Any views, or advice, TIA

I have two working kidneys.
The risk of rhabdomyolis is present for any person who undertakes extreme physical activity/muscle use for which they are not conditioned.
I’ve seen it in a young guy who was the head of a Lion costume at Chinese New Year a few years ago ... 6+ hour’s of squatting, jumping, holdingthe lion head up, ducking weaving.
I’ve seen it in a young woman who was encouraged to do something like 200 band assisted pull-ups.
Another was body builider. Can’t recall exactly what he had done.
(Other than that I’ve seen it mostly on elderly people who fell and weren’t found until a day of two later).
The cases I’ve seen all were admitted to hospital for IV fluids, strict fluid balance monitoring and monitoring of CK and other bloods including renal function etc. Theg we’re discharged over a few days but would have required months for gradual rehab of affected muscles.
From exercise, it’s not common to get rhabdo to the point it’s clinically significant but it does happen on occasion. It can basically be avoided by paying attention to your body.
Of course, for renal patients even an acute kidney injury from dehydration, let alone trying to flush out byproducts of muscle breakdowncan be far more complicated.
Why not talk to your kidney specialist? They shoul to be up to date with all things nephotoxic and how they would relate to your specific situation.

Thanks for the info, will do next time I see him. Did not know anything about it, until I saw this article, and the doctors never mentioned to me to be careful with exercising. I will ask a few question when I see him next (which is next week actually). Thank you!

You will also find that at a good Crossfit gym/box you have options to scale workouts and not be pushed to continue beyond what can be done safely.
Rhabdo IS rare though, but definitely run what you’re doing/considering doing past the doc.
