You can try to have coffee before working out and see how you feel, if it gives you that extra push. I like to have coffee beforehand often, but not always, and i noticed that just coffee and nothing else and a workout sometimes equals to a very unpleasant heartburn during it, but i love coffee and drink a few cups a day. There's nothing wrong with doing it either way, so whatever gives you better results.

I always have an almond milk coffee - like you I train at 5am. I wondered if I’d get more out of my training by eating something prior but I tend to find that I struggle if I haven’t had a decent dinner the night before. I can’t eat at 4.30am.

I train in the evening after work I eat my protein shake meal and take a caffeine tablet (200mg) before gym. If you can manage without, train, but most folks need some energy in the system before training...especially if lifting heavy...

I always have coffee made with milk first thing in the morning else I can't do anything. I also get up around 5ish.

I never drank coffee before going to the gym-pool at 8:30 in the morning. I have a light breakfast at 7:15. After reading on the forums that coffee gives a boost to a workout--I tried it. Yes it does. Now after breakfast on workout days I have a small cup before heading out the door.

I like coffee and a light breakfast before hitting the gym. Black coffee, oatmeal and skim milk. My gym opens at 5:30 so I can get this in and be there at opening time on weekdays. I do add a little ice to my coffee to cool it down so I can drink it right away, but usually drink it black (there is baileys in it right now).

I eat lightly, but don't drink coffee until after. Coffee is not excessively diuretic for me, but on top of the liquids in breakfast (milk, kefir) and the 24oz of water I always drink first thing, there could be a tipping point. It would be especially inconvenient on rowing days, when I'm out on the water for an hour and a half.

What time do you go to bed? If you're not getting 7 hours of sleep or so, maybe that's the issue? Maybe go to bed earlier or get up later.

I always have coffee, and maybe a small protein shake. Empty stomach workouts don’t work for me.

I wait until after I workout and enjoy my coffee as a post-workout reward lol. But before and during my workout, I prefer powerade! :D

IIRC, I'm told that if you exercise first thing, you are using cortisol. If you drink caffeine first thing, with early exercising, your body won't make the cortisol any longer.

My understanding: our cortisol levels are naturally higher in the AM anyway. Exercise doesn't "use" it, we don't want to maximize the amount we make, and drinking coffee doesn't impair the production of it.

I am not an expert though. Do you happen to have any sources for this?

I would guess that, if you are rising and hurrying off to the gym before work, that eating wouldn't make much of a difference. Your body would not have time to digest much of it and utilize the energy it provided. But I do not really know.
Caffeine is an excellent. activity performance-enhancer. But, even caffeine, which get absorbed fairly quickly, takes 20 plus minutes to have its effects.

I have a cup before my morning workout but it's more out of habit than to help me. I try to at least eat half a banana for some fuel. I'm not one of those people who can work out on an empty stomach. Experiment with a light snack and/or coffee and see if it helps you.

I put my gym clothes on and feed the cats but that's about my limit before coffee. I almost always make sure I get up early enough for a coffee and a small breakfast of fruit and yoghurt or a mini bagel or something. I take another coffee in my super keep warm mug and have that after.

I always have coffee (with a splash of milk) first thing in the morning. If I am feeling hungry before working out, I will have half a protein bar or a banana (I'll finish the other half with my second cup after the gym). I don't know if the coffee helps my workout...but it does help me get my kids up and off to school in the morning.

I need a cup of tea and usually a light breakfast before my workout... I don't have my first coffee until I arrive at the office.
