Weight workout if you have bad joints/back/etc.

I have hired 2 trainers and both of their workouts are bad for me. I have a slipped vertebrae so anything with impact is out (no plyos or anything jumpy) and I also have arthritis in my knees so even things like squats and lunges are painful. I feel like the less muscle I build, the worse I will be in the long run. OTOH, when all exercise is painful, then it's hard to do and equally as hard to hobble around the next day.
Has anyone gone through this and found something that works?
Right now, I just do a recumbent bike for cardio (even that bothers my knees). But, it's the least painful of all other exercise.

I should say that machines at the gym are the least painful, but I'd like to try something at home if possible. (Might not be possible).0
