I recently learned that soy reduces the effectiveness of the thyroid meds. Its back to basics now. Most foods have soy in it. So we have to buy foods for the things that are NOT in it. Gluten free, sugar free, fat free, and now soy free at least for me.

Sadly this is true, but why do you have to go off sugar, gluten and fat?1

Well, it's debatable. If you Google thyroid, you'll see a thousand things to avoid, including cruciferous vegetables. My dr said that since I'm on Synthroid I can have things on the Bad list.0

Why gluten free, sugar free, and fat free?0 -
there is limited to no research supporting the gluten free, sugar free, fat free diet for thyroid issues; the soy issue is documented, but honestly all my endo said that meant was avoid having any soy products within about 3hrs either side of taking meds2

I was just saying that we have to buy foods that are free of gluten, sugar, fat and who knows what else. I am only looking at foods without soy.0

Your right when I first started having trouble with my thyroid had my right side taken out I started researching about it and along with my doctor who agreed they tell you to stay away from all soy products I try to do the best I can but on the list it says to stop eating gluten and to watch the carbs it's got a big list of green vegetables you stop eating or limtit intake of these veggies. t's not easy I'm 55 and I had my right side of my thyroid taken out one week before my 50th birthday has not been perfect about in relation to the diet for my thyroid but I'm really trying now so I wish you the best on on the health of your thyroid.1

Soy is the worst, but gluten also effects your thyroid. I have problems with my thyroid too so I have to be careful with what I eat. Only have half of my thyroid left.

I'm 62, severely hypothyroid, adequately treated on 175mcg generic synthroid daily, and I lost weight just fine (50+ pounds in less than a year at 59-60), while eating all that stuff: Tofu, tempeh, miso, edamame, dry-roasted soybeans, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, bread, seitan, nuts, olive oil, avocados, cheese, you name it, and plenty of them. TSH levels tested every 6 months, staying steady, and I feel fine.
YMMV, but it seems the negative effects are not universal.0
