To eat, or not to eat....

So what's the deal. Should I eat something before I work out first thing in the morning?
Also, I have a coffee on the drive to the gym...
Thanks in advance.

I personally can't eat anything before early morning workouts. It would make me feel sick. I get up at 4:45 and leave home around 5:00am after letting the pups out and letting them eat so I don't really give myself any time to eat or drink anything. While the dogs are eating I fix my water bottle and just go before I can talk myself out of it.2

If you want to you can, but you don't have to.6 -

Kind of in the same boat. Up around the same time, make lunch, let the pup out and out the door just after 5. I'm not the least but hungry, so I never do eat. But just about energy or metabolism benefits..if any at all. Thanks for the comment.0 -

It's entirely up to you and your own personal preference.

I don't know that there's anything in the way of energy/metabolism benefits. It's more of a personal choice. It's coffee-only for me before swimming; I just don't like having much in my stomach when working out.1

4 days a week I'm at the gym at 5:30 (Friday is my rest day so I can run more on the weekend). Bowl of oatmeal, glass of milk and coffee. Anything more and it's too much in my stomach, but anything less and I just can't do it. I've played with changing it up and I go back to this.
Personal preference.1 -
Do what works for you personally. If you feel you would benefit from eating something then eat. For me I workout better when I'm not running on empty.1

Appreciate the comment @Tacklewasher !0 -
I'm up at 3:45, at the gym by 4:30. No way I could eat that early.
Additionally, once I do eat, it's like that pushes the start button and turns on my hunger. So, I push back breakfast for as long as possible, usually around 9:30 or 10:00.
Meal timing, as it relates to working out, is only important for elite athletes (like Olympians, etc). For us mere mortals, it doesn't matter much.1 -

Tea/Poached egg and 1 slice wholemeal toast And a banana afterwards if I'm hungry again (which I usually am LOL)2 -

What time do you get done working out? That's nuts you are able to push breakfast until 9:30. That said, you nailed it, as soon as I have my shake after the gym, it opens the hunger floodgates for the rest of the day. I might have to give it a try - see how long I can hold off eating after my work out...appreciate the comment.1 -

Careful comparing yourself to her, she's a friggen beast at deadlifts3 -
There's strong evidence that doing resistance training or exercise in general in the fasted state is better for tweaking your metabolism for improved fat burning as well as increasing insulin sensitivity. Certainly, there's a preference. But, there are many diet and exercise myths that have grown a reputation all their own. Having to eat before a workout is one of them.2

Great. Thanks @terryritter1 . So much conflicting info online, just never know. I am way more comfortable on an empty stomach anyhow. So that's really good to know.0 -

Even if this is true, for the majority of us having a lifestyle that is sustainable, enjoyable, and helps us feel our best during exercise is way more important for long-term success than minor tweaks to our metabolism. So if someone feels better eating before exercise (not the case for OP it seems), then that would probably be the best choice for them.6 -

Done about 6:00, have to be at work by 7:00. Black coffee when I get to work, then breakfast when my stomach starts growling.2 -

Agreed. And if I remember correctly, the fasted state metabolism stuff has been disproven?!?1 -

Don't know. Haven't seen her around for a while. She must actually be working.

Are you hungry before you go? Then eat. If not, don't. As long as your performance doesn't suffer from it, it really doesn't matter.1

I have to eat something. I go to a 6:00 a.m. exercise class three days per week. I make my oatmeal at home, eat about 3 or four bites, then bring the rest of it to finish once I get to work. That works for me. Everyone is different, it seems, some of my exercise classmates cannot eat a thing, others eat a piece of fruit or an energy bar. I can't drink coffee before a workout, that's for sure. I will not say what would happen if I did, let's just say you wouldn't want to be behind me and leave it at that.0
