Thinking about going to a gym

I have never really had any luck with gyms before. I tried going to the gym in college and nobody would help me. I joined a Zumba class several years ago I wanted to learn about strength training but again nobody around to help. My town sucks. A town about 20 miles away, also the town I work in, has a gym. I can get a discounted rate because of my job. Currently I am working out to Insanity. I have a weight bench and a few different sizes of dumbbells but I don't know what I am doing. So I just follow Shaun T. Starting month 2 next week lost 16lbs in 5 weeks. I'm just not sure if the gym will be worth it since I'm already doing pretty good right now.

I have worked out at home before and had good results but I love the gym. I have found the group classes really fun and offer variety to my workouts. But it's up to you, if you don't think it will add anything then I wouldn't spend the extra money on a membership.

I want/need access to too much equipment for working out at home, so I've learned to enjoy the gym. Plus, once I'm there, I'm there for one purpose and one purpose only, so I'm not really going to get distracted or feel like I'm being "hurried."

Doesn't mean it's for you. There are plenty of online resources for workout plans and videos on form and how to do most any exercise now. Most gyms around here anyways include a free session with a personal trainer with your membership to help orientate you to the gym and to set up a basic workout plan. You can always sign up for a few more too.

Classes are a great way to get variety and maybe meet some people, too!

Since you don't know what you're doing, teach yourself what to do. It's not that hard. The pinned post at the top of this forum lists all the popular programs, and there's also one in my profile. If you need more help with form, there's tons of tutorials on Youtube. Also video yourself doing the exercises to check your form. You can train at home for a while and then decide if you want to join a gym. :+1:

I now work out at home, using a bench dumbbells Swiss ball, medicine balls and bands, and a doorway pull-up bar. I found gyms problematical because sometimes I would have to wait a long time for equipment. As far as home workouts go, you can’t beat the Beachbody products like Sean T. I started P90X a few years ago and am now really enjoying the Hammer and Chisel workouts. If you decide to go to the gym near work, what worked best for me was going first thing in the morning. It beat the rush hour and gets the workout sorted first thing. Only mistake I made once was using the sauna which made me feel sleepy for the rest of the day. Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

After talking to the owner I think I will give it a try. There is no commitment unless I want the premium package it's only premium because it has tanning and I don't do tanning beds. They have boot camp training and personal trainers. They also have some people on staff that do physical therapy for sport injuries. Personal trainers are only an additional $10 a month. $40 a month total for unlimited access and a trainer. I think that's reasonable.
