Probably not, many have done it and are fine, the Eskimos have done it for thousands of years, the real question is, if your body is adapted to eat carbs too, why deny yourself that? I thought of doing keto but it makes no sense to restrict myself from pizza, pie or an occasional cookie. One life.

I don’t think it’s unhealthy necessarily, but I do think it’s not maintainable in the long run.

I think the jury is still out.

Funny you should mention that. This is stolen brazenly from Aadam Ali's Physiqonomics page this morning.

Being a very low-carb diet means that carb intake is restricted to 30-50g per day, eliminating pretty much every source of carbohydrate–yes, even fruit–besides vegetables. This super restrictive nature is where the argument begins: “The diet is too restrictive,” “Nobody can stick to a ketogenic diet for the long-term.”

    Uh, yeah, about that...

Luis Villasenor of the popular Ketogains community has been in ketosis for over 14 years. And there are hundreds, if not thousands, of people in the KetoGains community (and all over the web, like the subreddit /r/keto/) who are not only sticking to the diet but are perfectly happy and getting great results using it. I was in ketosis for over a year and used the diet with great success back in 2015.

I wasn't able to maintain it long term, but that doesn't mean other people can't.

It's as healthy or unhealthy as you make it.

I agree with this, and would say like most diets.

I think the jury is still out on sat fat, and prefer to limit it myself, but you don't need to consume tons of sat fat on keto. I also think vegetables are very important, but you can eat a good many vegetables on keto.

Ultimately one of the big issues for health is being able to maintain a healthy body weight and feeling good enough to exercise. If keto helps you do that, it's healthy, and if it's not something sustainable for you (which it isn't for lots of people), then it might not be.

I also think that you don't need to lose weight and maintain doing the same thing (not exactly the same, I'm not promoting a fad diet or super low cal approach), and some find it easier to keep a deficit with very low carbs and then to include more when in maintenance.
