Whatever your fitness level allows you to do

    Agreed.

Start with whatever is comfortably difficult for you and go from there. Probably not every day, but every other day or 2x week is probably ok as a very very very general starting point. We can't really suggest how hard or how long - your level of fitness should dictate that.

+1 to previous comments about intensity and frequency, and I'd add that (1) duration needs to fit sustainably into your life, and (2) duration and intensity are interrelated.

What I mean by #2: Most of us find we can go a little harder for a short duration than we can for a long duration. (Exactly how hard varies with fitness level, but the general principle applies to most any fitness level.) So, if you're semi-new to exercise and have an hour to devote, a slower walk on the level might be ideal if it's manageable for you to walk that long, but if you only have 15 minutes, you could walk a little faster (or with slight incline) for the shorter time. (Those times are just for an example, not to imply that you must walk for an hour. ;) )

One idea is to build up duration, frequency and intensity gradually. Start off shorter and easier, with rest days, then gradually increase until you find your personal sweet spot. You want your workouts to leave you feeling happy and energized, not burned out and exhausted. It's supposed to be fun! :)

Some people like to use "couch to 5K" (C25K) apps on the treadmill, once their fitness level is up to it. These start you off with walking on a particular schedule, then gradually introduce running intervals between walking intervals, until you can jog/run for 5 kilometers.

C25k is a good place to start

As previously said, do what you are comfortable doing.
I personally just walk on an incline for 30m to 60 mins, depending on how far into the cut I am.
Run if you like or use HIIT, just do something.
