Getting started at the gym

Where should I begin? How long for? What machine and should I also weight train?

hate to be "that guy" but begin by cruising these forums. Then, walk in and ask your gym for advice. Have them show you around, ask them for a fitness evaluation, and ask them to help you create a beginner routine. Write it down if you have to.
How long? That's up to you. A google search shows many sites suggesting 30 min a day. Increase/decrease as needed.
What machine? Also up to you.
Weight train? Again, up to you.
Google will give you general advice that is, for the most part, good. Go in, get active, work for a bit, then go home. Without knowing how active you currently are, or how comfortable you are (is walking difficult? did you used to lift regularly? marathon runner? wanna try c25k? etc), it's difficult to give you anything other than "Look at these forums, ask your gym for help, and google the rest."1
