Unfairness At work

Anyone else notice this going on in the workplace ? For example at our work you have to work weekends & sleepover shifts, I do not have to do this in my role as I am Monday- Friday 9 til 5.

But there has been certain changes underway @ work and my manager asked me if I wouldn't mind doing a weekend shift once every 7 weeks, to basically do her a favour. I said yeah, ok. What with me not having to do sleepovers I thought why the hell not, I'l take one for the team. But it's been brought to my attention that there is a long standing staff member who for 10 years has claimed she can't do sleepovers, cos she can't sleep in the office. (There is a bed, just to let you know) and also hasn't worked a weekend shift in like 10 years also. She isn't Monday to Friday 9-5 like I am. But now that the sleepover payment has increased she suddenly can do sleepovers ! A new rota came out today and sure as guns, she has many Friday, Saturday and Sunday off. Never asked to do a weekend shift. Other staff members are talking about it and how unfair it is. So my manager basically asked me to cover some weekend shifts cos she's doesn't want to ask this particular staff member to do them. But I'm not even contracted to do them ! How bizarre is it that 1 staff member gets such special treatment.

Anything like this go on at your workplace ? Or have you noticed any unfair goings on.

In my experience, there is usually some unfairness in every workplace and it can last for years. However, at some point these "golden child" workers usually get what is coming to them. Either the powers that be lose patience with them, they're seen as being too difficult for a promotion, or new management pulls the plug on preferential treatment.

The best thing to do in my opinion is to keep on being an excellent employee and show some flexibility, though not too much. One weekend shift every few weeks sounds doable. If your supervisor asks you to do every other weekend or keeps putting you down for more weekends, you could say it's not working out for you and request fewer weekend shifts (as discussed originally). I think standing up for oneself while also being flexible usually just improves management's view of you. Being a professional with a good work ethic DOES stand out especially over time.

    heres another

my office has 70 workers. there are 2 IT guys, me being one of them. because im more easily approachable, all 68 workers call me first for anything and everything, while the other guy sits on his *kitten* all day. I even had to yell at the supervisor the other day telling them how unfair it was that everyone just bombards me with their issues. they always call me first no matter what, and don't even bother with the other guy. they go " oh if your busy, ill just wait". no..why don't you call the other guy? " no its ok ill wait"

    GRRRRRR

I feel your pain. Been there, still deal with it on occasion.

Simple solution: "I can't work on it without a ticket."

Management has no idea what you really do without a ticket or how much you work. It also significantly reduces all the "drive-by's"

Sometimes an employee has been there long enough that they get a reputation, that intimidates supervisors.
I once worked at a place with a woman who was in her late 50’s, early 60’s, and never worked past four. She disliked most people under 25, and scared everyone, because she had been around forever, was in with the district manager, and surrounded herself with minions who were her eyes and ears.
She eventually got fired for a few nefarious things, and, looking back, they realized she had been doing them for years.
Give it time, the bad people never know when to quit, and eventually hang themselves

I work retail, all employees are suppose to work a weekend day, There is a woman that last year, she and the boss set up a deal, that she would work till close every week night, and she would get weekends off, it worked well for all involved, well within a few months, she slowly started to work less closing, now she closes 1 night a week, and still has weekends off... This same woman gets a lot of what she asks for, shuffling her days off here and there, and then wines that everyone hates her and she never gets what she asks for. Very aggravating...

The support staff at my office had an issue with this last year. They brought in a new HR person to handle it and it seemed to help a little.
