My Journey

I started eating Keto in September of 2017.I had high blood pressure and taking medicine,i was on oxygen to help me sleep,i was depressed and taking Seroquel and Duloxetene for it and overall aching muscles.I had both knees operated on for torn miniscus and my fasting glucose levels were pretty high, doctor said i was close to being pre diabetic. I was a horrible eater and i was at 290lbs and climbing.
Breakfast was always a constant,3 eggs, cup of grits, generous margarine and coffee with sugar or 3 eggs with hash browns, bacon and pancakes, extra syrup please!I never missed a breakfast,it is the most important meal of the day right?! ;-D
About an hour or 2 after breakfast,it was snack time, piece of cake or cookies, big glass of milk. Then it's lunch time,a box of blue box mac and cheese or a whole tombstone pizza. Then a small snack.Dinner was almost always pasta. Then another big piece of cake or icecream or 6-8 oreos and ice cold milk.
I went through 2 gallons of milk a week, box of spaghetti, macaroni, fettuccine, egg noodles etc , a case of coke,my diet was basically, soda pizza, pasta, coke, cake and cookies and eating out.My activity level was moving the mouse around playing video games.
After learning about Keto,i thought it was something i could do.Eat meat lose weight...Sign me up!So I jumped right in and after 2 weeks,my craving for sweets was completely gone! Now i was eating 2-3 lbs of bacon a week,3 dozen eggs a week,8 sticks of butter,Lots of ground beef, ribeyes, strip steaks, ribs, fried chicken a block of cheese.I didn't count calories,i didn't count macros,i just made sure everything i ate was full of fat,had no carbs and i ate a lot of it.Well the weight started skydiving,in the first month i was down 30lbs.I kept reading, trying to learn all i could about Keto.
In the next month i only lost 10 lbs but a total of 40 pounds in 2 months,no complaints from me.
November,December,January and February,i didn't follow it real close, added some cheat days,an occasional pizza here and there but nothing like before.During this time,i maintained my weight,i didn't gain anything back.
In March i started reading, learning more, monitoring my Ketones,Glucose and tracking my GKI,slowly started back into Keto, after a couple weeks i lost about 5 pounds.I learned that i needed to adjust my macros,i was most likely getting to much protein which was being converted to insulin.I now try to keep an eye on the fat to protein levels of foods i eat.So i got my new macros, started weighing and tracking everything i ate.I am very careful with looking for hidden carbs and sugars, mostly sticking to whole unprocessed foods as best i can.I get a lot of recipes from Pinterest.A couple weeks ago i learned about intermittent fasting.I thought about breakfast and how i still always ate breakfast and how i really only ate it because it was a habit, not that i was really hungry, remember how they always pounded breakfast as the most important meal,i guess it was deep rooted.I started a 16:8 fast then after a week went to 18:6.My first meal is around noon and my last meal is around 6pm.I usually do a fat bomb in between to get my calories up and get in the fat because honestly i get pretty full trying to eat my 6pm meal.
As of today,i am at 230 lbs from 290 lbs,my waist went from 42" to 36",i am off all medicines, just got back all my blood work and everything is within acceptable range.I am 59 years old,5' 10" tall and through all of this,i still am very sedentary.I have a maintenance job and basically i just walk around all day, according to the pedometer,i log about 5 miles a day, granite that is at a slow walking pace but at least i am moving. My knees don't hurt anymore and i overall just feel better, mentally and physically.
I am new here and have read a lot of posts, some pretty strong opinions from people telling people what works and what doesn't.In the end i think the best thing to do is learn and try different things, find what works for you.As you lose, make adjustments, learn more.
I would like to lose at least another 40lbs and i think it is very doable!I don't feel like i am on a diet,i just eat different,i know when i am really hungry and when i am not.I still eat a lot of foods that i like.I can still eat lasagna, pizza, tacos and even chocolate cake,it's just made different and in most cases, tastes as good if not better.remember learn, experiment and have fun!
