weight training and trying to lose weight

I am interested in weight training because I enjoy it, but it is also pretty confusing to me. I like being able to strengthen my muscles and be able to lift heavier things. I am just starting out.
I am also trying to lose weight. I was always told when I was growing up that weight lifting is a waste of time if you are trying to lose weight. Is this a myth? I've also been told that if you don't do some strength exercises while trying to lose weight, the weight you may end up losing is muscle.
Is this also a myth?
Any advice? Anyone know of any articles or books to read about this topic?

Hi, you may want to have a look at the following link, it seems a great program of weights + cardio and meant to strip fat.
I have started this today and am very optimistic about it.
Thanks,

IMO, yes, that's a myth.I've also been told that if you don't do some strength exercises while trying to lose weight, the weight you may end up losing is muscle.

It's true that while you lose weight, you will lose some muscle along with the fat. The reason lifting weights while losing weight is not a waste of time is that it prevents muscle loss while losing weightAny advice? Anyone know of any articles or books to read about this topic?
My advice would be to lift weights. It sounds like you enjoy it, and it will make it so that most of the weight you lose is fat (assuming a reasonable calorie deficit and sufficient protein).
Better advice is just to read any of the posts that sarauk writes!

Alphamine by PES is the first of it's kind. I currently lift and I am on a cut and taking it as well. This stuff is insane.
I love it. If you lift and are in a calorie deficit, you must try it.

Yes, you can lift weights and lose weight.
It's smart to lift weights while losing fat as the strength training will help you to preserve your muscle.
