Just thought I'd throw this out there - For all of you who specifically shrug, do you also target the lower traps and rhomboids specifically?

If not you could be setting yourself up for an imbalance which will affect the scapulae and shoulders.

Bent over rows, seated rows, Lat pulldowns, and pullups.

I'm speculating, but I would think someone who incorporated iso work wouldn't just iso one thing.

Can't speak for anyone else but I row and do pull ups like a mother.

You'd think so, but then I guess any sensible person who trains would. However you'd be surprised at the number of people I see who don't, although to be fair, although a few people are just unaware, most are bros who just want "t-shirt muscles". It's just like all the guys who only bench and curl.

Also most people have over active upper traps, and weak\inhibited lower traps and rhomboids just from desk posture, before they even start training. They may even have tight pecs too, so they kind of hunch shrug too.

Anyway, even though it's not my thing I'm not against isolation work like this, and I hope most people who do it, understand the need to maintain balance, I was just throwing it out for consideration.

Yes I incorporate shrugs into my SL5X5 workout. I enjoy doing them.

The only thing close to a Shrug that I do is when I do Power Cleans (which is pretty much involuntary)

As I lost weight, I gained shoulder bones that stick up more than I'd like--I can see the benefit for me of doing them at some point.

If you're doing it as part of a deadlift, then you are deadlifting too light. I have no opinion on doing them in isolation. Well I do, but I'll keep it to myself.

I disagree. I am closing in on a 500lb deadlift and am able to shrug in excess of that.

    You a lifting lady? lol

I feel like I stepped onto a new planet. Is there a comprehensive thread for beginners here that I could read? I don't want to ask stupid questions. Thanks!

This really took off, thanks for all the replies. :flowerforyou:

I shrugged my deadlifts two days ago and my traps are still screaming. I was using my husband's old football training method of shrugging the lift to ensure it is actually being lifted as opposed to the bar just being dragged up the legs. That may be outdated or just a quirk his trainers back then had to make sure nobody was phoning it in. As a newbie lifter, I'll try most anything but it wasn't my favorite, especially with the lasting soreness and while I wouldn't mind shortening up the look of a freakishly long giraffe neck, I'm not overly fond of the especially developed trap look for myself.

I don't. My traps are starting to pop out as it is from the rest of my lifting routine, so much that people comment on them.
