Since we have determined that gym equipment isn't the most accurate for counting calories...

I have a Vivo hr by Garmin for daily wear and love it but it doesn't work too well for lap swimming. I also have an antiquated Garmin 910 XT which is a good piece of gear but I find the telementary strap is cumbersome. I am considering the Garmin 935. It is pricey but I want it! I was wondering if anyone could offer up insight on the differences between the 910 and 935. I don't think the 935 requires a telementary strap. I run, swim and just started Spin and LOVE it. I also lift but don't really accont calories burned because there are so many variables. I would like to have the actual calories burned for my cardio for tracking purposes. Thanks much.

For swimming, pretty much all the Garmin watches turn off the HR sensor wen swimming is selected. To get HR data in the water, you need a swim strap (HRM-Swim or HRM-Tri).

I've got a Fenix 3HR and, while I do swim with it, I don't have a strap so the calories is just estimated from time and swim distance.

If you swim in a pool, you want the HRM-Swim as the HRM-Tri will break down from the chlorine.

Outside of swimming, I went with the Fenix 3 as I could get it with the Sapphire lens (I'm rough on things, broke the screen on a VAHR) for less than the 935, and way less than the 5X. The 935 is the same as a Fenix 5, but in a plastic casing (software and hardware is the same) so it is a good choice if you are careful with it. They are also coming out with a new one (625 I think) that can hold music so you don't need your phone to listen to tunes while you run.

I haven't been tracking my swim workouts since I got my 935, but I believe Tacklewasher is right - the 935, IIRC, doesn't track HR during the swim, so it's calorie burn estimates probably wouldn't be any different than what you'd get from your 910 (unless the calorie formulas have changed dramatically).

Just another confirmation that Tacklewasher is correct. I have a 935 and it won't use the wrist OHR to track heart rate during swimming - it requires a chest strap.

Thorough review of it here, including swim performance: https://www.dcrainmaker.com/2017/03/garmin-forerunner-935-depth-review.html
