Hi all - i am 4 months out from my second ankle surgery. Before the injury (severe sprain, torn ligament, bone bruising) I was exercising regularly and in the best shape of my life. At this point it’s been 5 years of dealing with this injury, as well as a year of whiplash pain from a car accident. With my exercise options limited I’ve gained about 30 lbs.
I really want to lose the weight in a slow and healthy way, I know it will take a long time so I need to be committed. Just looking for support.
My only exercise right now is physical therapy and doing hand weight reps, going to try and start swimming again this week as well.
I need to focus on my diet which is tough for me, I really love sugar... looking for support and ideas to limit calories and not go crazy

In my opinion, the best way to get going is to just start logging what you usually eat, trying to hit your calorie goal. After a few days, start studying your diary. What did you eat on days you did well as opposed to days you didn't? Where are you wasting calories? Then start tweaking and substituting, little by little. Figure out how to make hitting your calorie goal as easy as possible!
For me personally, I found the key was focusing more on what I needed more of, as opposed to what I "needed" to cut out. I found when I focused on getting enough protein, fiber and healthy fat, everything else fell into place. But you'll have to find what works for you. Welcome, and good luck!2 -
Definitely log as honestly and accurately as you can. Some might disagree, but I always included a small sugary treat at the end of the day. Usually, this was a small Ritter Sport chocolate. Or I'd make pudding with no fat milk and enjoy a one-half cup serving for 70 calories. Sometimes I'd have a glass of red wine with dinner. The key was to work it into my calorie goal. I'm really not into deprivation. You don't need to punish yourself to lose weight, just eat good food that you enjoy, and train yourself to be disciplined about hitting that daily calorie goal.2

I had a hysterectomy in November and I'm working to get my groove back, too. I was sick for about a year before so i stopped working out and put on some weight. Really, it's not the number on the scale that bothers me, it's being out of shape.
In your case I'm wondering if swimming might be a good option since its low impact. Hmmmmm1 -
