It works like any other diet. If you consume less calories than you expend, you’ll lose weight; if not, you won’t.

Other than the initial water weight loss as you flush water/glycogen from your body, you don’t lose weight any faster on a ketogenic diet. The main way it helps is that some people find high-fat diets more satiating and therefore easier to adhere to.

The carbohydrates in bread and pasta are no less natural than the carbohydrates in potatoes. They're all just carbohydrates. If you're doing keto, you'll count all carbohydrates, including those in vegetables.

To get the net carbohydrate count, you subtract the grams of fiber from the grams of carbohydrates in a given food.

I believe to get net carbs, you subtract the fiber grams from the total carbs grams, but I don't do Keto.

You might want to check out the Low Carbers forum:

Agree, the low carb forum is awesome and everyone's super supportive.

I have been on this for over 2 months and found it (1) a very difficult week to get used to it (both understanding it and the physical withdrawal symptoms of no sugar or carbs) but then (2) very easy to follow once I understood net carbs, what to eat and what to avoid.

The main thing to keep in mind is to try to hit your protein macros (or exceed them), think of carbs as a limit not to exceed, and then just eat fat to fill in and avoid hunger. NOT to just go nuts with fat. A lot of people start at this just gobbling up lard and bacon, and that's not a great way to lose weight. Calories still count. But keto keeps in mind the issue of satiety and for me and many people, helps with cravings.

No need to use net carbs if you don't want too. I have been keto for a few years, and I just look at total carbs.

Ketosis is just limiting carbs. That's all. Replace some of those calories with fat or protein (so you are at a caloric deficit) and you'll be good to go.

Total carbs minus fiber equals net carbs; it doesn’t matter where they’re from. I keep my net carbs under 10% of my calories (multiply net carbs times 4 and divide the result by your calorie total to get the percentage) to get and stay in ketosis—my diary is public if you want an idea of what that looks like. I don’t feel the magical super-power-like benefits of ketosis people talk about, though—mostly I just need to pee more often.

    But.

I’ve been a binge-eater with no self-control my entire life, and suddenly food has lost its power over me. I know I need to eat and I enjoy doing it, but I don’t get overwhelmed and “have to” eat anything. I don’t overeat. It has literally been life-changing...but that’s for me. If your brain works differently, and if you overeat for different reasons, keto might well not solve them. In that case it’s a lot of math, a lot of cooking, a lot of confusion and extra peeing, and it’s not really necessary.

The calorie deficit is the main thing. The vehicle that gets you there is up to you.
