Keto masters, hear my plea

A while ago I tried keto and I thought it was fantastic except for one small detail. I could feel the food piling up in my gut but my bowels refused to move. Googling the subject led me to the dreaded "glass poo" from keto which had me running right back to carbs. I miss the benefits and mental clarity though. I want to try again but this time make sure I'm getting fiber in me. Last time I may have had too many meats and such. I love broccoli but apparently it is heavier on the carbs. What do you recommend?

How low were you trying to go?

Did you get plenty of electrolytes and stay hydrated?

Do you have any evidence of the mental clarity or are just attributing feeling different to one of the keto buzzwords?

What other benefits did you notice?

The last two questions lead to an important point: the proven benefits of keto (outside of helping certain neurological conditions) can be achieved with any high protein, lowish carb diet that includes sufficient fats.

I went for about two weeks total, wanting to go as long as possible (possibly months). I was making sure to drink water and "snake juice" (basically salt water, pink salt and NoSalt mixed together for electrolytes). I noticed a difference in being able to sleep better at night for one thing, don't know if that was a major contributer or not.

An avocado a day is a good start.

Fiber=carbs, so if you want more of it you’ll have to watch net carbs instead (total carbs - fiber). You can fit a pretty substantial amount of broccoli into a keto day if you want!

I started keto almost a month ago and I had the same issues at first. I do eat a lot of avocado, broccoli, spinach, and chia. Also, this can be bad for some people but a sugar free hard candy or two usually speeds things along.

I've never heard of keto glass poo, and I've been keto for most of three years. Is that constipation of the runs?

If it is constipation, fibre may not help - I know it never helped me - because fibre adds bulk to BM's... Not good if constipated.

If constipation was the issue, this could help:
    • More fats like coconut oil - fats can lube things and coconut oil is notorius for causing the runs if you increase the amount you are eating too fast.
    • Coffee
    • More salt
    • Magnesium supplements - use Mg oxide if in a real bind or Mg citrate if not an emergency.
    • tree nuts - don't know if it is the undigestiblity of nuts or what, but it helps many
    • Exercise
    • Meat - for most people, more meat = normal stools
    • Less dairy - cheese especially seems to block some people up.

If infrequency was the problem, that is normal. Keto = less fibre = less bulk = less poo (and often less gas).

If runs were the problem, cut back on everything listed above.

    Good luck.
