Lactic acid in muscle

My brother and I were talking about this yesterday. I tried doing research but I simply don’t get it. I been working out for 4 years so I guess I’m a athlete. Him on and off for years. What is in simple term and how does this affect the muscle? Is it good or bad? And how do you know if you have it?

Lactic acid can build up in your muscles when you excercise. It causes muscle soreness/pain.1 -
