Just because MFP limits you to 1200 calories, doesn't mean you have to eat that many. One of my friends did that, but she got her doctor's approval first, and she had to send him weekly menu and progress reports.

Oh here I thought we have to eat at least 1,200 but not more.
I hope you noticed the main point. She got her doctor's approval and he helped her monitor it. Another thing to consider, is that transitioning to maintenance will be much harder if you lose more than 1 - 1&1/2 pounds a week.

The site limits you to 1200 calories so that your body can get the necessary number of calories without damaging your body. I am sure that multitude of others will pop in and explain it better than me.

Under 1200 calories, and you won't get the necessary amount of NUTRIENTS, ie protein, carb, fat, vitamins, minerals, water, along with other get things like amino acids (building blocks for proteins), antioxidants, phytonutrients and more.
Things your body NEEDS to work PROPERLY, like the amazing fine-tuned machine that's it's capable of being.

Do want to be driving a lean mean fast Ferrari that's freshly tuned up, or a old Datsun pickup with gas tank crude and burnt oil and only 1/2 the spark plugs working ? Your call.

And no, simply popping spplements isn't the same as consuming the real stuff from real food.
There's a reason they're called supplements, and not substitutes !! lol

While some of the details of the following article are not written in stone, it should give you a general idea .
(please people let's not split hairs over the numbers in the article)

Yes, here is a wonderful video to remind you about "good intentions" at the beginning not being enough. It's all the steps in between that must be executed to get you to the right goal so things don't wind up wonky. Here's to a GREAT beginning. :drinker: http://movievideo.me/listen/?wid=WqIeso6SBm0&title=jackson-five-abc-123-full-version

eta: woops it was a video LOLOLOL

Maybe I should eat some cookies and not complain that I have extra calories that I didn't use. Haha

or eat something that has some nutritional value, so your body can function properly, ie your intestines, your kidneys, your heart, your brain. Haha

    Hi

My name is Lisa, and I just join this site. I'm 22 female, 155.0 and 5'1. I want to loose 2 pounds a week and it says to loose 1 pound a week, I would need to eat 1,200. But if I want to loose 2 pounds wouldn't I take 500 calories off. Can someone please, help me. My goal weight is 105.

    Thanks

2 lbs a week is too much for your weight. You should rethink your approach. Don't make losing weight the end goal. Aim for fat loss, which can be achieved through a modest caloric deficit, a balanced diet & strength training.

better eat it one more time so your calories will be at 1246. Then workout for those 46 cals. Half an hour of stretching out to do it.

The thing is that even if you set your loss to 2lbs/week, you aren't necessarily going to lose that each and every week - it's not a guarantee and a lot of people find it disheartening/off-putting to rely on that. For me at 163cm (5'4") and currently 74kg (about 162lbs) if I set my loss to 2lbs/week MFP puts me down at 1200 as well, which I've found is far too low for me and unsustainable. So I set my calorie intake goal based on my BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate) which at the start was around 1600cals, and now is about 1530. So I've been eating around the 1500-1600cals per day, plus some or all of my exercise burn depending on how hungry I get. I've lost around 12kg in 14weeks (26lbs). That's nearly 2lbs/week and I'm NOT following MFP recommendation. Some weeks have been smaller losses, some weeks bigger.

My point, you may not achieve those losses regardless of how low you set your calories. And eating fewer calories is not always better. If you are just starting out, look up your BMR (it is an estimate of how many calories your body needs JUST to maintain its vital functions) and eat around that to start with. I reckon yours would probably be around 1500cals per day, but there are calculators online which can tell you. You will still lose, probably slower than you want but sustainably. As you lose, recalculate your BMR and adjust your calories accordingly. Doing it this way will allow you leeway to reduce your calories safely if you stop losing.

^^This is what has worked for me, but others might have more suggestions.
