Holistic Medicine for Weight Loss...

What are your thoughts on it? I only ask because I have a customer who comes into my work who has, over the last few months, lost a good amount of weight and looks great. She claims to not calorie count, does very minimal exercise, yet eats pretty decently. She had also became involved in holistic medicine (which she now has a certificate for) and claims it was her key in helping her lose her weight by sorting out and dealing with other factors in her life, such as personal stresses and problems as well as medication/hormone treatment, etc. She had workups done and all her lab results showed up 'normal', doctors said she was 'fine', but emotionally and mentally did not feel so.

I know the main points of weight loss are calories in vs. calories out as well as adequate sleep, discipline, diet, and exercise, but what about other factors in life such as certain stresses? Work stress, financial stress, death of family/friends, relationships, hormone imbalances, lack of supplements, etc.? Can those things types of things truly affect weight loss (or the rate of it) when you're pretty much doing everything else correctly?

Adequate sleep is important for weight loss. And mental health as well. Some depressed people tend to over eat for comfort. By sorting out her mental issues she probably started eating more "normally".

My internist is both traditionally trained AND the head of complementary medicine at our local hospital, and I'm quite sure he has shared everything about diet/ weight loss with me, and nothing has ever worked for me, BUT if this person has been doing self nourishing things, I say more power to her.

That's exactly what I considered, too. Stress/depression tends to lead to comfort food/snacking, which all adds up. Funny enough, I work in the bakery at my store and she used to come in at least every day if not every other and get 2 German Chocolate Brownie Bites - probably 250-280 calories. She doesn't get them anymore, will get coffee drinks with almond milk instead of regular, and asks for half the amount of chocolate as she used to. You can tell she's more aware of what she's consuming while still treating herself which I feel has helped a lot for her weight loss. She mentions doing 'hormone balancing' as well through various trial and error with supplements when she was being coached.
