CICO and calorie counting explained by analogy

Internet forums are like flyer post boards where people can hang up ads or their offers or thoughts or requests. Going to a post and posting that it doesn't interest you would be like seeing a flyer advertising guitar lessons and getting so incensed that you dial up the phone number listed and leave an irrate message stating how you don't want guitar lessons and it was silly to bother you with the offer of them.
It is this weird "everything is directed at me" attitude. Perhaps there are posts and advertisements that aren't actually for you....and that is okay.20 -

I like using the vehicle/fuel tank analogy as well, especially in comparing fuel use and metabolic rates. Metabolism is mass dependent - some people are like a Prius...others a Titan and fuel intake and energy required for basic function is variable. The difference is that biological systems are adaptable and you can adjust your intake and output over time and effect your mass.4 -

I also like it as an analogy on the level that there are more similarities than you might imagine.
Cars react oxygen with hydrocarbons to produce energy in the form of heat and mechanical work and release carbon dioxide and water as waste products. Humans react oxygen with hydrocarbons to produce energy in the form of heat and mechanical work and release carbon dioxide and water as waste products. They do nearly identical things...the only real difference is that cars literally burn hydrocarbons while humans couple the oxidation of hydrocarbons with other reactions via enzymes to perform the needed work.8 -

Oh I fully understand that not everyone wants to read a long forum post, that is why I chose to post in the debate thread where the preponderance of people who enjoy reading lengthy essays is higher than in the other areas on this forum. I am not presuming to have mass appeal and there is no particular need for me to cater to your particular predilections with regards to how you like your forum posts. What I don't understand is why you would waste your time responding here at all given that you weren't interested. As for your "everyone does it" response to people criticizing your TL;DR post no...not really, I don't do it...you won't see me in Chit-Chat making fun of people's inane banter for example because that sort of posting isn't for me so I don't spend time there. So how about we drop it and I can save some time to post more overly long essays in Debate and you can go back to high-fiving people's selfie posts and responding with eggplant emoji's over in Chit-Chat.

I don't know anything about cars and I dislike math but this example was clear even for me,well done, thanks for sharing it!!
on a side note.. reading is a good habit and I see it's getting lost a bit.. tsk tsk

Did the person scoff at you calorie counting, or did they just say “thanks but not for me, I’ve found a different way of doing it”? Sometimes people taking a different approach can feel like they are belittling your way of doing things, but they’re really not.
Maybe they’d converted their engine so they didn’t need to keep so focused on putting gasoline in at just the right time, because they had a reserve tank that could comfortably use a different type of fuel, and that fuel tank could convert the car into fuel when needed!
It’s clear some people just like the driving experience of different cars, but the main thing is we are all on the same road!16 -

I think it's funny that people are upset about TL;DR guy. He's obvi just a troll.
That being said, I tried to read it and I couldn't figure out what it meant. And I know what CICO is. So maybe some people have reading and comprehension issues. Or maybe they just like formulas instead. Live and let live.

If someone has reading comprehension issues, appropriate responses would include asking follow-up questions of OP or simply not posting anything at all.
If someone prefers formulas, there is no reason to expect others to restrict their comments accordingly. It's just a personal preference and the rest of the world isn't obligated to communicate only in that way.

Was there something in particular you found confusing about the OP? Aaron is quite patient and willing to try to explain things in different ways for different people, or perhaps one of the other posters reading along will take a stab at translating it if you clarify what was difficult to follow.

I can see that certain people, engineer types of math-dominant brains, could get lost in the engineering problem of how the single motor could use all those fuels. It only takes a second or two, but it's an external combustion engine, and before the poor dude is halfway through the story he chasing rabbits.0 -

I have no problem with people being not interested in what I have to say or having the way I said it not appeal and just moving on. It is just weird when they make a big show out of being not interested and then contribute nothing else as if I had asked them personally what they thought. But yeah, I agree with live and let live.
As for people trying to explain my post, no need unless the person is actually interested. I'm perfectly fine with this sort of thing not being appealing to everyone and if they prefer different types of examples or discussions and don't feel like putting in extra time into figuring out something that doesn't really speak to them that is absolutely fine. I am not offended at the concept that someone doesn't particularly like the way I chose to explain something, it is impossible to appeal to everyone.5 -

I'm an engineering type and I know that the Army had multi-fuel engines in Deuce and a half trucks. So the idea of different fuels really didn't bother me.

Honestly wasn't posting it for either of those groups...just thought up the analogy and liked it enough myself to share assuming a niche group might appreciate it as well. No rule stating you must appeal to the masses or write to achieve the maximum possible readership or impact.
This thing in the culture where people seem to think public posts must be written at them specifically is sort of new. If it doesn't appeal to you then well chances are I didn't write it for you...and that's okay.7
