Has anyone done the GAPS (Gut and Physcology Sydrome) Diet?

We, my husband , son and I are looking to do the Gaps Diet starting Friday. We are all struggling with some significant health problems, and are hopeful to alleviate some. Has anyone done this, and do you have any suggestions for how long to stay in stage 1 of the introduction phase? I am thinking 5-10 days.

Surely the plan tells you how long to do each stage?

I would strongly recommend finding a GAPS Certified Nutritional Therapist if you can afford one.

Otherwise, it is recommended that you stay in each phase of induction for a minimum of 1 week, longer if needed. Once you are in the full GAPS diet is when the actual reintroduction of foods takes place.

Be forewarned, GAPS is extremely restrictive (ie in Phase 1 Introduction, any meat you consume can only be boiled) and difficult to stick to, but if you can stick with it, it is very beneficial to help heal your gut and also to determine what, if any, food intolerances you may be dealing with.

Have you read the book? The website is also extremely informative http://www.gapsdiet.com/

We are currently on day 6- and are not spending quite that long on each phase... I am actually finding the boiled meat and veg soups very filling and once the cravings left - I feel wonderful. I will say the first 4 days were tough... we all felt horrible, and I went to the doc and got antiboitics for my sore throat. I decided not to take them though.... I didnt want to go through this a second time if that is what it was from. We are giving each stage 3 days and adjusting accordingly. (I did not tolerate egg yolks so I am staying on stage 1) My sons blood pressure came down to normal range and he has been told to stop taking bp med because it was too low this morning. I wish i could say the same. My bp is elevated and a 30 lb weight loss has not helped... or this diet so far. But I am sure i have more healing to do. I have read the book, and several other books... which makes it a bit more confusing. We are struggling to do this to the letter as the cost of organic meat and produce is beyond our means. I am sure we will see some benefit, and are now more determined than ever to grow a bigger garden this year and raise our own chickens again. We thankfully had 2 goose in the freezer from 2 years ago that we raised and we found local organic whole chickens for 1.99 a lb! which was awesome.

Unfortunately hubby and I ended up in a bit of a disagreement as he wants to make popcorn (coconut oil popped) to have at the drive in tonight, and I implored him not to... He has not read any of the books... so he is slowly reading highlights... I am hopeful he changes his mind... as that is a hard one for me to pass up.

I read somewhere that some people do the best they can on the intro- continue onto the main Gaps, and then revisit the intro diet annully... I think that is where we fall. I cannot become legalistic about it with my family or I will end up at the ER with a heart attack... not work the stress. So I am trying hard to have enough stuff prepped for everyone and pray constantly that they will embrace it for their own health.
