Hey so I’m (re) starting my journey to be a healthier person and loose weight and I’d love to have anyone’s advice or tips. Also any advice for the gym would be greatly appreciated because I don’t even know where to start at the gym thanks in advance

In these types of posts, it would help to establish common ground in terms of what you already know and/or plan on doing.
Do you understand the basics of nutrition? I.e. energy balance/CICO and the role of different macronutrients.
In terms of exercise, what are your goals? Pick up a reputable program that aligns with them.1 -
read the stickied posts. get food scales and accurately count calories. meal planning is essential.1

I love to work out with these girls, its a great workout! I like to find videos all over the world and work out with them, I also like to go back in history and eat what the first people ate for meals. So I can say this, Have a lot of fun on your diet! make it fun so you don't hate it. 70% veggies raw or steamed, 10% fruit raw or steamed or boiled and nuts, roots, plants, and grains. and Oatmeal 1/4 every morning. that is my diet. Its from the bible. biblical-diet-plan,18
Im down 67lbs since January 2018 so it works. and I do a 2weeks on and 2weeks off cabbage diet you can look it up on line.12 -

Read the stickied posts, be wary of anything that is a "named diet" if you don't see yourself being able to stick to a way of eating for the rest of your life, it's more than likely a pointless thing to try. Like the rubbish about the cabbage diet above.
To lose weight you require a calorie deficit, you can do this by setting your MFP account with a reasonable rate of loss for your stats and logging your food/drinks accurately and hitting your calorie goal.
If you want to be healthier, make some small changes to your existing diet to ensure you're eating healthier sized portions with a good balance of nutrient dense foods. That doesn't mean you have to cut out foods you enjoy, just make them fit into the way you eat, in moderation.
Is the gym something you will enjoy? I ask because there is a lot of exercise that you can do outside of the gym. Try and incorporate exercise for your health rather than as a weight loss strategy.

In terms of both diet and exercise, it's more important to enjoy what you're doing than to do what's 'perfect'.
So when it comes to diet, you may find that you need 'cheat' days, or that you can't stand 'healthy' foods, or that your chocolate addiction cannot be denied; and that's fine. The only necessities are that on average you have a calorie deficit, and that you eat a varied diet that includes fruit and veg. Everything else is open to negotiation
Similarly, go to the gym, try out a couple of classes, pay for a session with a personal trainer, and find out what you actually like doing. It may be that you don't like going to the gym at all, in which case just do something else! Walking, cycling, outdoor sports, bodyweight strength work at home - they're all perfectly good alternatives.
The best regime is the one you'll actually stick to.3 -
Rubbish about the cabbage diet! I'm down 67lbs so it works and I am never hungry and I have no cravings for other foods. So I love cabbage diet, it has all the veggies one needs with roots and spices, herbs. I guess the long term is not needed with me, I like the short term goals I accomplish them faster and in that I feel rewarded. I have been eating cabbage soup for over 50yrs so I don't think I'm going to change it's the one thing I can count on inlife. "It likes me and I like it back"~7

Point is you don't need to do it to lose weight. The reason you lost weight is because you were in a calorie deficit, it may have all the veggies you need, but your body needs more than just vegetables to be healthy it needs fat and protein too.6 -

The problem is telling newbies one specific food is the key is really limited. I personally would rather stab myself in the eye with a fork than eat cabbage soup every day. If that's the advice I was given I probably would have given up.
Short term goals are great until you reach goal weight. Lots of folks succeed in losing the weight, it's keeping it off that gets most of us. That's why we suggest losing weight in a manner you can stick to forever, because ending the "diet" when you reach goal weight trips people up.
It's awesome you found something that's working for you, but it's really important that new folks learn the basics of what's actually required rather than chasing random posters anecdotes, at least in my opinion! That's why your post is getting some push back.
OP, read the Most Helpful Posts thread pinned to the top of the forums and let us know if you have more questions. Good luck!10 -
At the gym, I would definitely start by investing in a personal trainer for a session or two. They'll work with you on what your personal goals are, and will set you up with a routine that will help you achieve them. If you can't afford a personal trainer, there are also loads of apps that have great workout routines. Nike training club for example.1

@SaunaSuit I eat plenty of cabbage and do like cabbage soup, but would be miserable eating it every day. Not everyone has the same tastes you do.
Please don't hijack OP'S thread, she's just looking for beginner tips, not pages of info about cabbage soup. Maybe you should start your own thread with recipes or to discuss your take on goal setting or diets?6 -

Beginners trying to get started on a reasonable weight loss program don't need a bunch of woo about cabbage soup diets. Eat a reasonably balanced, nutritious diet consisting of foods you enjoy and stick to your calorie goals. That's all that is needed.

As far as getting started at the gym, definitely check out some pre-built plans. A lot are free and you can get all kinds of worksheets, books, and apps that will tell you what to do, when, and how.

And yeah, the stickied "must reads" posts are great.5 -
The first 2 weeks are hard. Itll get easier after that but don't be tempted to drop calories again until weight loss slows. Best of luck0
