Has anyone tried those little cups they show on tv and sell at walmart where you break the egg into a little cup and stick the cup in boiling water to make hard boiled eggs but no shell

Nope but I did buy a Nordicware microwave hard boiled egg thingy that works really well. I used to love peeling eggs as a kid so that part is no big deal. :)

I am embarrassed to say my wife bought a set of those. I figure they will end up in the cabinet of misfit kitchen gadgets pretty soon.

They take about 50 percent longer to cook. If you forget to spray them with oil like she did last time the in-house dish washer will not be happy (that's me). I put the suckers in the regular dishwasher... we will see how clean they get. She got them very recently so she has only used them twice so far.

Yeah I tried to scrape the egg out with my fingernail and gave up pretty fast. That one was partially on me though. She was going to boil some eggs normally and I teased her about already giving up on that silly purchase.

If the egg is sorta ready to peel, putting it in a jar with a half inch of water and shaking it like your life depends on it has worked for me, if you're in the market for non-manual peeling tips.

There are little silicone hammocks you can get which are supposed to be for poaching but the eggs are are basically hard boiled in the end, just not round any more.

Most mornings for breakfast I have an egg, bacon, and cheese sandwich from my usual coffeehouse. They call it a "fried egg" but it's really a baked egg that they can make in their little convection oven. They break an egg into each cup of a nonstick muffin tin and just put it in the oven. Seems to me it would work just as well.

Poaching eggs in a pan of water is easier than people make out. If you love eggs then perhaps you could practise

I was gonna say, that sounds like a lot of effort to go to to get an extra-hard poached egg in a specific shape...

I’d just use a silicone egg poacher and leave the egg in ‘too long’.

The only time the Joy of Cooking has failed me is by suggesting using the cold water start for making hard boiled eggs. If you put them in water already boiling, then in ice water when they are done, they peel effortlessly.

It depends on the eggs. The cold water thing is an improvement but it is not 100 percent. The best way I have found is super annoying but it is more of a sous vide. It just takes soooooo long.

Hard boiled eggs peel pretty easily cooked in the Instant Pot - my favorite way to make them now.
